Fifth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Evening.

Cally was very contemplative. So far the reaction to her new powers weren't the rousing 'hurrah' she'd kinda hoped for.

So here she was. Popping individual kernels of popcorn, because she could. Plus, it was really helping with that whole focus and control thing.

Gelmoore Gals and Vanessa Saturn were on tonight, so those were sort of acting as a background to her popping efforts.

"Whatever, Cally. Just . . . whatever."

Pop. "Can't you just let something go right for me, please?" Cally said. "I thought you'd be happy I could stop having to look up to you and could stand on my own."

Nadia set down the plate she'd been retrieving rather firmly. "You didn't have to look up to me in the first place! I don't even know why you did! Ever since you broke up with Anders, you've been acting like I'm some sort of goddess and you're not worthy to be around me, then getting mad when it turns out I'm human! And you're not standing on your own. I don't know how you got witch's powers, Cally, but they're not yours and they're not right."

Cally wasn't angry, she was just hurt. Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she stammered. "I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry that I looked up to you, and I'm sorry I was wrong, and I'm sorry that it wasn't fair to you. But I'm not sorry about this. This is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I don't have to worry about being weak anymore. I'm not the stupid little girl that everyone keeps around cause she can fix things. I'm the girl who could be just as useful doing things rather than cleaning up after it's all over!"

Aw crap. And now Nadia felt like a heel.

Wait, back that up.

"Done for yourself? What exactly did you do, Cally?"

"I... ummm, I did a spell that, erm, gave me these powers?"

Nadia didn't know a whole lot about spells.

She did know that they tended to, say, go wrong a lot. Especially when someone who wasn't good at spells was casting them. Fandom had taught her that much, at least.

". . . do they even have witches in your universe?"

Cally shook her head. "Not that I know of. But so far so good. Other than that... sorry about last night."

"I still don't think this is a good thing. But I really wasn't trying to belittle you. I thought you were fine the way you were."

Cally nodded. "You gotta admit, though, bein' a spy is eight million times more cooler than a dentist."

"Yeah, but spies sometimes get tortured. And their teeth pulled. And then? They really, really need dentists."

Cally clutched a hand over her mouth. "Owwwww."

Pause.

"You think the people who do the pulling are properly trained?"

"I really doubt it. Well, trained in making it hurt a lot, maybe."

"Okay, so, no possible dentist-spy jobs. Good to know," Cally said.

"Well, I wouldn't discount it completely. Spying takes all kinds."

"Good to know," Cally said. She wiped at her cheeks. "I really am sorry about all that."

Nadia sighed. "It's okay. Just . . . I'm human, okay? I'm not perfect. I'm not supposed to be. And neither are you. You really were just fine without any extra powers."

Cally shrugged. "I didn't think so," she said. "I just felt so... useless, you know?"

". . . I do, actually. But you could have talked to someone about it."

"You really think this was a bad idea?" Cally said.

"I do. But I guess it's your choice."

Cally nodded. "I totally think it was the right one. But hey, I've made dumb decisions before."

"Just be careful, okay? You can be infuriating, but I do like having you around in one piece."

Cally nodded. "Like I've told, like, everyone. I am capable of bein' careful, you know? And I'll try not to be so infuriatin'."

"Good. And . . . if you are in trouble, then let me know if I can help."
