First Floor Garage, Wednesday, All Day

Sam couldn't sleep anymore, even though she probably should have after her week at the Time Agency and in Cardiff. Her new little brother Peter seemed like a perfectly nice kid, which was reassuring.

Which didn't mean she felt the need to be social today. She turned on the CD player, ate a couple of chocolate covered espresso beans, and stacked some food on her work bench, which she'd hopefully remember to eat. Then she went to work on the Swoop Bike. It probably needed babying tuning--she hadn't ridden it or worked on it in almost a month.

Why was the Doctor wandering the first floor of the dorms?

Sam put down the wrench she'd been fiddling with. The combustion system...oh, yes. Person speaking to her. Right. "Hello, Doctor. How are things going with you?"

"Going quite well," the Doctor said. "Rather a large influx of new people to the island yesterday, wouldn't you say?"

"Oh, absolutely," she nodded, "I'm just sorry I didn't get to meet more of them. Unfortunately, I was just too tired after spending the week with Jack."

The Doctor paused.

"Yes, I can see how that might be very tiring."

Anders came down to the garage shortly before noon to polish his glider before taking it out for a ride. "Mornin', Carter."

Sam blushed, but realized it was her own fault for not explaining better. "Oh, no. We spent the week being tested by a place called the Time Agency."

"Morning, Anders," Sam waved without looking up. "How were your holidays?"

"Attacked by any good books lately?" the Doctor asked.

"...You're going to join the Time Agency?" the Doctor looked genuinely impressed and surprised.

"Quiet, but good." Anders took a rag to a water spot he only thought he saw, frowning. "I didn't see you around. Have fun?"

"Not since finals week," Anders said with a shrug. "That might've put me off reading for a while. At least until the last of the papercuts heal."

Which they so totally already had. But he wasn't about to admit to a teacher that he'd abandoned reading in favor of playing computer games the minute his last final was over.

"Maybe?" Sam turned to face The Doctor. "They offered me a spot," which she hadn't mentioned to Jack yet, "but I'm still undecided. You know of them?"

The Doctor scrutinized Anders for a moment.

"And the average papercut heals within a day."

"I don't know if fun is the word I'd use," Sam grumbled, "but it was interesting and I helped save the world, so it was generally good."

"Sort of, yeah," the Doctor said. "Not really well, mind you. But they don't seem like too bad a sort, via reputation."

Sam sighed in relief. "It's good to hear that, thank you," she said. "There's been some...controversy on that subject."

"Well, it's also possible they're also evil, with a good PR department," the Doctor admitted. "What's the controversy?"

"Whether they're good or evil, and why, exactly, they wiped Jack's memory," Sam explained.

Anders chuckled and paused in his polishing efforts. "Just another holiday adventure in the life of Sam Carter, huh? You were probably way more productive than I was."

Understatement of the century, that.

"They were . . . really aggressive papercuts?"

"Ah, yes," the Doctor said. "Very good question. Wish I had an answer, really. But I'm as much in the dark as he is on that front."

Sam nodded. "Yeah. So, I'm still deciding if that's what I want to do with my life. Space pirate's still a pretty viable option."

"Sometimes it's good not to be so productive," Sam said. "I'd love to be able to catch up on my sleep."

"A very good vocation, space pirate," the Doctor said. "I know someone who got his own space station that way. Might be able to see if he couldn't help you out a bit."
