Gym, Cheerleading practice, Wednesday, afternoon (after classes)

Buffy bounced into the gym, looking extremely cheerful and ready to start the practices for the new year. "Hello everyone! I have great news!" She waved an envelope at them. "We're going to our first competition on the 24th of February! Isn't that fantastic? Of course, this means we must train very hard and diligently until then."

Judging from Buffy's expression, this was a good thing.

"Also, on Sunday we have a new try-out session - which I hope you know - so I hope as many of us as possible can be there, and remember to bully badger threaten coerce convince tell all your friends!"

Buffy smiled brightly again and turned on the CD player. Oh Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine, you blow my mind, Hey Mickey!

She raised her voice. "Today we're going to try something really exciting! Pyramids! Small, light people at the top, strong types at the bottom. It really important that everyone's paying attention and, um, try not to fall down." She chewed her lip a little worriedly, before smiling again and clapping her hands. "Let's get to it!"

"I may just hold you to that." She was completely, utterly adorable. It wasn't the first time Jack had met royalty, but it was the first time he'd ever met royalty this sweet.

"It's cheerleading, more an adjunct to other sports than a sport in itself. They're sort of a cross between heralds and jesters, their job is to urge the crowd to support the team."

Irulan tried to focus on the group before them. "So, they are heralds and jesters. That's very amusing, we haven't had a jester in court since one jester nearly poisoned the Padishah Emperor the Eight. A shame."

"They probably won't poison anyone," he assured her. "I think they're more interested in leaping around. And they are very pretty." He turned to look at Irulan. "I'm surprised they let you come here without a bodyguard of some sort."

"My father attempted to but someone from the school office *handwave!* convinced my father not to send my Sadaukar bodyguards." Irulan paused, it still bothered her that he agreed. "Probably just as well, since the first response a Sadaukar would do is to kill anyone within mere meters of myself."

Irulan took out a small device. "But I carry my poison snooper on my person, always."

"Then I'm glad they're not here -- I'm kind of fond of being alive." Not to mention that there'd shortly thereafter be a dead Sadaukar. Jack studied the device in her hands. "I take it poison's a popular way of getting rid of people on your world."

Irulan didn't consider that. Now she has a reason to celebrate the Sadaukars were not here. Not that she's planning to celebrate.

"It is," Irulan said with a nod, "There's a law prohibiting all out war but it does not prohibit the use of Assassins. My family has many enemies who resort to them."

"Do they onlyuse poison? I mean, is it a custom or something? No, or you wouldn't need a bodyguard," he frowned as he answered his own question. "What do you do if your bo-- your Sadaukar goes down before the assassins do?"

"I have a personal shield," Irulan said, "I'm... adept at knives and I'm almost not proficient at the Bene Gesserit martial arts, the Weirding Way."

You can tell from her tone she was being shifty at her proficiency skill.

"Uh huh," Jack said doubtfully, studying her. Well why not. "Want to learn to shoot? It's amazingly effective, and you don;t have to get close to whoever it is to stop them."

"I'd love to!" Irulan did not gush. "Anytime of day you should choose to practice would be an efficient use of time!"

"Okay - we can start one morning next week - I'm still not sure on my class schedule, but I'll let you know and we'll work out a good day." And he'd have time to ask Sam for tips on teaching someone how to shoot. "You're going to have to lose the headdress, though."

Irulan looked a little forlorn at that, she was hoping to impress Jack with her best hat.

"No, headdress." Irulan nodded. "I will look forward to any day you choose."

"Excellent." Jack settled himself comfortably next to Irulan to watch the antics of the cheerleaders. "I think you'll like it." He grinned. "It's my second favourite thing to do."

Re: Audience

Curious, Irulan asked. "What is your first favorite activity?"

Re: Audience

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Jack slanted her a very wicked look and stretched like a cat, ending much closer than he had been, his side pressing against hers. "I don't think your father or your Sadaukar would approve of me telling you that."

Re: Audience

[identity profile] irulan-atreides.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Irulan shivered, the implication quite clear.

"I-I think not." She said rather shakily. Unfortunately.

Re: Audience

Jack hadn't expected quite that reaction. Though he realised he should have, if people weren't usually allowed to get within three meters of her. He moved away slightly and patted her gently on the back, suggestiveness gone as quickly as it had come.

"I didn't think so," he said reassuringly. "But we'll teach you to shoot, and you can surprise him with it when you get home."

Re: Audience

Irulan breathed-in, the physical proximity was... it would take some getting used to. She was grateful Jack backed-off.

"That would be an accomplishment, I would give anything to show him I could do more than knife fight." Irulan said agreeably.

Irulan wondered if it would also make her father look at her as something more than a chess piece, or increase that out look further. She brushed it away and decided not to contemplate it further.

"Then we'll make sure you can," Jack promised, putting a little more space between them, leaning back on his elbows. "I'm sure he'll be proud of you."

Re: Audience

[identity profile] irulan-atreides.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Irulan inclined her head. "Thank you."

She followed Jack's gaze back to the cheerleaders and watched them in companionable silence. She was smiling slightly, glad she'd made another friend.
