[3rd Floor Common Room, Evening] Birthday Party!

It's Weiss's 17th birthday and he's providing chocolate cake and (moddable) soda! There's even some vegan cupcakes if you're so inclined. This shindig is open invite, so come on down.

[OOC: ~~I will be in and out for a bit, so count on Weiss's threads to be slowplay until after 8 and then full-on party mode after that~~ I'm here!]

ETA: Oh yes, there's actually a sign up that indicates party and free cake, if your character needs a reason to wander in. I forget details.

"And if one of those goes off in the immediate area, I guess you have bigger problems than your next meal." Parker shook her head, bemused. "So, what's the verdict from your snooper toy?"

Irulan looked down at the device. "It says there is no poisons detected, although the gummi bears do register a warning that it might hold some unpleasant bacteria."

"Not uncommon. They'll hold anything. For a very long time." Parker took one, then almost choked, laughing before she swallowed. "And they're alcoholic. Keep that in mind too." She shook her head, thinking. "How often do people get assassinated, at your court? By poison, anyway?"

"A lot more common than I'd like, since last year there have been five dukes and two barons who have died of poison," Irulan kept her voice carefully neutral. "And the year after that two daughters of a minor count have been killed. But it is better than the alternative. A ban has been in place against all out war between houses as to minimize the body count, so it has been a war of assassins. Poisons and accidental deaths are the weapons of choice."

"Marvelous." Parker looked exceedingly annoyed. They spend a zillion dollars on stupid hats, and this is how it works out Irulan's court sounded like the Centre, lower on sneakiness, stepped up for ruthlessness. "And how many 'accidents' have their been in that time?"

"A... lot." Irulan said, remembering the faces of the girls that were closest things to friends she's ever had. "Until recently no one was allowed three meters from me."

It was no wonder the kid was a little under-socialized, with that kind of protection and threat working on her. "Well, no one here wants to kill you," Parker said lightly. "And the next time we have a dance, you'll be lucky if you get away with people staying three centimeters away from you."

Irulan smiled. "That is most gratifying to hear although, I hope you would not take it a miss if I continue to use my shield and snooper. The snooper at least until I sampled all the delicacies of this planet." She paused and considered the part about the dancing. "I am afraid the concept of any physical closeness would be something to get used to."

She looked around and decided, impulsively, to remove her headdress.

"Given how huggy some people around her are, I'm sure you'll either get used to it, or let them know they risk a broken arm. Works for me." Parker snickered a little, then smiled as Irulan removed the Hat from Hell. "Ohh, look. Now they can get within three feet of you," she teased.

"I may warn them of my personal shield, breaking another person's arm is unbecoming of a Princess." She said and smiled hesitatingly at the approval in Parker's voice. "This headdress does become quite tiring." Literally. Her neck ached.

"No one will report you for not wearing it, I swear." Parker grinned, studying her without it. "You're very pretty. Which is completely obvious now. And maybe arm-breaking is unbecoming, but sometimes? It's fun."

Irulan blushed at this compliment. "Thank you."

"I once broke my instructor's arm during my training, it was... most satisfying." Particularly because he was being particularly drill sargeant-y for the last few weeks. "The Reverend Mother gave me a stern talking to but my Sadaukar bodyguard seemed quite pleased."

"A protectee who can protect herself is a lot easier to guard," Parker said, partly from experience as the protectee. "I'm sure he was amused, too." She frowned. "Reverend Mother?"

"That is what my Sadaukar guard said," Irulan said enthusiastically. She paused, thinking how she should explain the Reverend Mother. "I am being trained in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. In my world, there are three powerful institutions who hold sway in the Known Universe, the Spacing Guild, the Imperial House and the Bene Gesserit.

My mother was once the most famous Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother until she married my father and now I follow in her footsteps."

"I see." Sort of. "Is that what you're in training to be, besides Empress?"

Irulan nodded. "It is, I would be the first to be Bene Gesserit and Empress. If I complete my training I would have with me the ability to sense lies and possibly, the future."

"Hunh. Then you are in the right place, I think." Parker considered. "There's a number of people here with similar abilities. They might be able to help you with that." She added a little dryly, "No, I can't imagine why people wouldn't want an Empress who could sense a lie, though. Not at all."

Irulan smiled wryly, "Do you know, the Reverend Mother is our Imperial Truthsayer as well?"
