[The Roof, Late Afternoon]

Alec hadn't really felt the need to go to the roof in a while, largely because life had been good enough to really distract from the urge to climb tall things and knock your potted plants and porcelain Precious Moments figures off the shelves and brood about who knows what.

Today though? Today was prime brooding time.

"Yeah, well, not all of us have a genetically enhanced body temp," Dean grumbled. He was silent for a minute then asked, "You okay?"

Alec shrugged, glancing at Dean. "Yeah, I'm good. Why?"

Dean pointedly looked around them. "Because you're up alone on the roof and you only do that when something's bugging you?"

Alec scowled. "I'm going to start making excuses to come up here for other things now, you realize. Maybe take up smoking."

"Yeah, that's a good healthy reaction," Dean said dryly. He nudged Alec's shoulder gently. "Does this have anything to do with Music class?"

"Music was fine," Alec said, shrugging. "I'm just thinking."

Sometimes it really was like banging your head against a wall when it came to trying to find out what was bothering Alec. But Dean was nothing if not persistent. "Thinking 'bout what?"

"Just... before," Alec said, unhelpfully cryptic. If there was anything Alec was bound to be less than forthcoming about, it was this. He already felt off balance and restless at Lorne's mention of it, but thankfully he hadn't had to talk about it, just get his warning or whatever and get the hell away.

"When you were still at Manticore?" Dean asked. Which really, wasn't a surprise. Actually it was more surprising that Alec didn't spend all his time brooding about his past considering.

"Yeah." He didn't look at Dean, but stepped up on the edge of the roof to peer over at the ground below.

Dean winced at how close to the edge Alec was getting, but successfully resisted the urge to pull him back. "Not thinking of trying to fly are you?"

Alec snorted derisively without moving back from the edge. "Are you kidding me?" He asked with a glance at his double, somewhat affronted at the suggestion he might be. "I could probably survive the fall, but it'd suck. I just wanted to look."

Something inside Dean relaxed a little at that answer. "Could you do me a favour and look from a little further back from the edge?" he asked.

Alec frowned at Dean over his shoulder and deliberately turned, still standing on the edge but backwards.

Dean winced again. "If you fall because you're deliberately doing the exact opposite of what I asked, there's not going to be enough 'I told you so's in the world."

"I won't fall," Alec said, apparently quite confident in his balancing abilities. "I like it here."

"Yeah, you would," Dean muttered to himself. "Look, could just just humour me and put a little distance between you and all that thin air?"

Alec took a very deliberately long step to put him back on the roof, raising his eyebrows as he turned to Dean. "Better?"

"Yeah," Dean said, relaxing with a sigh. "Thanks."

He shrugged as he turned back to look out at the sky, staying back from the edge. "Sure."
