[The Roof, Late Afternoon]

Alec hadn't really felt the need to go to the roof in a while, largely because life had been good enough to really distract from the urge to climb tall things and knock your potted plants and porcelain Precious Moments figures off the shelves and brood about who knows what.

Today though? Today was prime brooding time.

"I guess," he agreed, shrugging.

"The song you sang brought something that's over up again, huh?"

Alec muttered under his breath before answering, sounding aggrieved. "Knew I should've picked something else."

"It was a pretty powerful performance," Dean observed, moving closer until their shoulders were brushing again. "Though it sucks if you ever felt like that song."

"If I'd always felt like that, I wouldn't be here," Alec said grudgingly.

Dean noticed Alec didn't deny he had ever felt like that, but didn't call him on it. Instead he said, "I'm glad you are here."

He nodded, giving Dean a glance that was equal parts uncertainty and hope. "Me too," he said simply.

"You can talk to me about anything, y'know?" Dean told him, needing to make sure Alec was clear on this fact. "I'm not gonna judge."

"I know." Alec hunched his shoulders a little, looking down at the edge of the roof. "There's some things that just don't need to be talked out."

Dean thought about all the things in his past that he didn't want to talk about. "Yeah," he said simply.

It still drove him nuts though, not knowing what was bothering Alec. How could he possibly try to fix it if he didn't know what it was?

A long moment of silence passed and Alec shoved his hands in his pockets, thoughts heavy on his mind that he was stubbornly determined to keep to himself. He looked at Dean finally, offering a small smile to his double as he said, "Thanks." Whether he meant for Dean not pressing him further or just coming to offer his support, Alec couldn't really say, but he thought Dean probably understood anyway.

Dean nodded and let out a breath. "Ya think we could find somewhere lower and warmer for you to be broody?" he asked plaintively. "Possibly with booze? I'm freezing my ass off up here."

Alec grinned. "Sounds like a great idea," he said sincerely.

"Come on then," Dean said, bumping his shoulder against Alec's. "Before I get frostbite somewhere embarrassing."
