Second floor common room: Saturday Bed Time

The second floor common room looked more like nap time at a pre-school than the coolest common room in the dorms. That would be because there were blankets, pillows, the cushions from the couches and some foam pads set out around the room, forming comfy nests for wee tiny people to curl up in and sleep.

Jack - who was still wearing his kitty ears and had whiskers drawn on his cheeks - was there to tuck Emma in, but he'd be happy to do the same for any wee tiny people who wanted to spend the night.

"'Course I was," Rose said, "'M a HERO!" Then posed as such, she even had a soundtrack going.

"Well, I knew that!" Jack teased her. "Of course you're a hero. You're Rose!"

"Uh-huh, Defend'r of the EARRTH!"

Jack winced, because wow, she may be small but she was LOUD. "Yup, defender of the earth. And is the defender of the earth getting tired?"

Rose shook her head, "Nuh-uh!" Then promptly yawned, "'M not!"

"Not even a teeny little bit?" he asked, walking over to the couch and sitting down with Rose on his lap.

"Not even a little bit!" Rose said with a nod and pointed to the Doctor, "He's not sleeping!"

"I don't know if he does sleep," Jack pointed out. "But little Roses who defend the earth do need to, especially if they're even a wee bit tired."

Rose yawned, "But I don' need sleep either!"

"I think you do. I've seen you sleep, remember?" He actually wasn't sure if she would remember.

Rose made a face, "Not yet, you haven't! You're not in the ARDIS!"

ARDIS? That had to be TARDIS, and Jack went very still as he ruthlessly stamped on the urge to ask questions he knew Rose shouldn't answer. "I have seen you sleep, but you might not remember it. You let me stay at your house because it was a long walk back to my room."

Rose giggled, "Only mum's allowed to have friends over! I like boys but they 'ave cooties!" She leaned closed and whispered, "But Doctor Big Ears is my bestest mate ever, I think mum would like him, whatchu think, Jack-Jack?"

"I think I'm going to have to think about that," he replied with total honesty. "Doctor big ears is a good friend, but I'm not your friend, at least not today. I'm your big brother, and that means I'm allowed to stay over so I can keep an eye on you."

"Oh," That sounded right, Rose snuggled against his chest, "But tomorrow can we blow things up?" Then she took out her already battered, smudged story book from her hoodie and passed it to Jack, "C'n you read about Ridin' hood and the wolfy?"

Jack smiled and snagged a blanket off the couch, tucking it around Rose. "I could," he said, looking down at the book. "Or I could tell you my version." He cuddled her closer. "It's a good version."

"New story!" Rose said, over a yawn, "Okay, like new story."

"Once upon a time, because that's how all good stories start," and he was grateful for Parker's stories, so he knew how these went, "there was a little girl called Rose. And she had a red shirt with a red hood, and she was the defender of the forest."

Rose sighed happily and closed her eyes listening to Jack's story. She liked Jack.

He smoothed one hand down her hair, and kept going. "One day she was walking in the forest and she met a wolf. The wolf was big and the wolf was scary, and Rose was going to run away, until she saw the wolf was trapped."

"Poor wolf!" Rose whispered.

"I know," he whispered back. "But it's okay. Because Rose wasn't just the defender of the forest, she was its protector, and the wolf was part of the forest. It took a long time, many days, but eventually the wolf let her close enough that she could set it free. It ran off into the forest and never looked back, and Rose was sad to see it go. But it wasn't the last time she'd see it."

"Go Wolfy but poor Rose!" Rose said, yawning and burrowed her wee face into his chest. "'S a good good story Jack!"

"Yeah, it is," he told her, folding both arms around her. "Now you go to sleep, and you can dream of all the adventures that Rose and the wolf had. And tomorrow I'll tell you the rest. Okay?"

"Okay," she says in a sleep filled voice, closing her eyes and before she drifts off to sleep, Rose manages to whisper, "You're the bestest big brother ever."
