It was Oscars time, which meant, of course, it was time for a party, thrown together at the last minute because Zero had been in editing a lot recently. She had set out an array of handwavey bite-size tasty appetizers, big bowls of popcorn, and an assortment of sodas, water, and sparkling juices.

"My thing...er, Jack's turned into a mouse and I didn't want to step on him," Sam said, deciding not to ask about the swoo because it would just make her sound like her own grandmother. "What's going on?"

"Oscars party," Zero said. "Watch out that Jack doesn't get into the cheese plate, yeah?"

"He's not here," Sam glanced around again, "At least I haven't seen him yet. And, um, what was nominated?"

"Beyonce," Zero grumbled. "Beyonce a lot."

And Sam was feeling old again. "Do we want her to win?"

"No," Zero said, looking at Sam in shock.

"I haven't seen a movie in years," Sam said in her defense, then stared at the audience arrivals, "Is that Tipper Gore and the former Vice President?"

"Yeah, he's nominated for that doco about global warming."

"Huh. Probably more lucrative than politics," Sam perched on the arm of the couch to watch. "So, who're we rooting for?"

"Scorsese," Zero said. "He's nominated again, so, yeah."

"Again? Geez..." She didn't want to admit which movies she remembered him being nominated for.
