5th floor Common room, Monday after classes

River was happy and making popcorn went well with being happy. So popcorn were flying through the kitchen and River danced about, trying to catch as many as possible with her hands and mouth. Berthold was lying under his blanket, tentacles reaching out and trying to get to the ice cream carton without getting in the way of River. Her mood seemed to be contagious as the monster made cheerful squeals.

Dawn was bored and intrigued by the smell of popcorn, following her nose up to the fifth floor. She grinned as she watched River and Berthold, then walked into the room, trying to catch popcorn in her mouth.

She wasn't having much luck, but there was popcorn down her shirt now. It was scratchy. "You're in a good mood," she said, maintaining her position as person in charge of stating the obvious.

"I am," River agreed, and noticing Dawn's lack of success in catching the popcorn she dropped a handful in a bowl and added some ice cream, then handing it to Dawn.

"Thank you." This didn't seem at all strange to Dawn, as she'd often been left to her own devices and created similar food combinations. "I need a spoon," she decided, rummaging through a drawer, "and maybe some tobasco. So is there a reason, or is it just a good day to be River?"

River had expected Dawn to appreciate what other considered too experimental combinations of food. "Tabasco?" River asked. "I should try that. Yes, there is a reason," she added, feeling herself blush and smile uncontrollably.

"Isabel introduced me to it--it's a great combination of sweet and spicy," Dawn explained, then saw the blush and smile. "What? What happened? I like hearing good stuff." Also, she was nosy.

Billy has had Jimmy Buffet songs stuck in his head since Fairy Tales class.

Which he was glad of when he saw who was in the common room.

"Hey River. Hey Berthold."

River remembered that Isabel also had liked this particular sauce. "Sweet and spicy is a good combination. I made cookies with chili and maple syrup." She paused for a moment, considering exactly how to phrase the reason for her good mood, and decided for a clear and comprehensive explanation. "I slept with Jack," she said, smiling happily.

Neil was following the smell of popcorn, figuring that it would make a nice snack to enjoy while he worked on his homework.

He chuckled as he saw River dancing around. She definitely seemed in a good mood.

"Billy! Help yourself to popcorn." River hoped whatever memories she had picked up from him the other day wasn't something that would reach out and attack her today. Not a good day for that. It was selfish, of course, so to compensate she handed him a bowl of ice cream.

River waved as she saw Neil. "This is a good dance. You should try it." She threw a handful of popcorn over him.

Catching some of the popcorn in his mouth, Neil grinned.

"I'll let you own it. I'm just passing through on my way to grab some popcorn!" He called out, dark eyes twinkling.

River pointed at the ice cream. "Go well together," she said. "Help yourself."

"Thanks." Billy smiled. He kept up with the Jimmy Buffet songs. He wondered what it meant that he was more worried about freaking her out than about his secret getting out.

"Are there any popsicles left?"

She shrugged. "I spent the weekend in the library researching something that didn't happen, so I'm all good. What about you?"

River shook her head. "Berthold ate them all. Quickly."

John popped up after work, smelling the popcorn from all the way down on the fourth floor.

"Thank you, but the popcorn with do," Neil said as he gathered up a napkin full of the buttery goodness and then turned and headed back towards the stairs.

"Oooh popcorn!"

"See, now I never would have thought of that," Dawn said, impressed by that. Dawn squealed. "You did?? Congratulations! Are you...are you okay?" Obviously she hadn't gotten that far with Sam yet.

"We should bake cookies together," River said, being confident that together they'd come up with combinations no one had ever tried before.

At Dawn's other question River's face turned into a dreamy smile. "Okay. Definitely." She could have gone into more detail, but had a distinct feeling Dawn wouldn't have appreciated that.

River waved at the newcomer. "Popcorn for all!"

"Oooh Pippi!" River giggled and threw a handful of popcorn over her.

"We should!" And then she thought about sending the results in a care package to her sister. Dawn was happy to see the dreamy smile on River's face, but was also relieved there wasn't more detail. "I'm glad. So...are you dating him now? Also, feel free to tell me to stop butting in whenever you want."

"Spent the weekend living like a Mark Twain character." Billy said. "Never did get to swim with any dolphins though."
