The roof, Monday evening

It wouldn't be entirely accurate to say that Nadia was back on the roof.

Still on the roof would be a better phrase.

It was breezy and cool, but not the same biting cold that had kept her from coming up here as much throughout the winter, so she might have been making up for lost time.

She still had her guitar with her, of course, though she wasn't playing it. Just looking out over the town, a slight smile on her face.

Cassie made it to the roof with a simple effigy, a small wooden plate painted haphazardly in red white and blue, in the same pattern as the Captain's.

She wordlessly nodded at Nadia as she set it on the edge of the roof and pulled out her set of matches.

Gee golly, there was something to lighten Nadia's mood. . . . She watched quietly, wondering at the miniature burning man thing.

After talking with Bridge, Parker was still restless and not ready to sleep. She headed to the roof, cigarettes in hand, but without her lighter. "Hey, Nadia."

Nadia looked up from her ponderings with a smile. "Hey, Parker. What's up?"

Cassie set fire to her small effigy on the plate, and sniffled quietly.

"Avengers assemble," she whispered quietly.

Okay, that was . . . odd. Still, didn't really look like anything for Nadia to interrupt, so she picked up her guitar and started playing very quietly. This way, should Cassie decide to notice her, she could, and Nadia could do something other than feel awkward.

After a long moment, Cassie looked over. "You don't happen to know 'Amazing Grace', do you?"

". . . In Spanish. It's 'Sublime Gracia'."

"Not much. Resisting temptation." She held up the cigarette packet, and smiled ruefully. "Thinking about things. You practicing?" she asked, nodding toward the guitar.

"Well the chords are the same in any language," Cassie said. "It's just... doesn't seem much of a memorial without music."

Nadia nodded slowly. "Who's that for?" If it was someone who had died fighting, maybe Cassie would be getting her head--now, now, Nadia told herself, don't be too rude.

She started picking out the melody on the guitar.

Nadia nodded. "I try to at least a little every day. Anything in particular you're thinking about?"

Parker was silent a moment. "Those nightmares you read about last night, on the Radio. I do love how the squirrels always know the stuff you'd rather shoot yourself than admit to in public."

"The second greatest hero ever," Cassie said. "Captain America. He... the war was over. But someone decided to assassinate him."

"I've noticed that." She set her guitar to one side. "Anything you want to talk about?"

"War sucks like that," Nadia shrugged. "Sorry."

"Some of them, no. Some of them...." Parker thought back to the first nightmare she'd had with Drusilla, and shook her head, thinking of yesterday. "Ever have one almost come true? Where you realized how close you were to screwing up, and just managed not to?" She fumbled open the cigarette packet, and tapped one into her hand, just holding it. "I dreamed I became a vampire."

Cassie nodded. "It was a stupid war to begin with," she said, wiping at her eyes. "The fact that... No one should have died. Not Cap, not Goliath, nobody."

"Most wars are stupid. But sometimes there are factors, injustices, that really do need to get changed." Nadia shrugged. She didn't really want to argue politics or philosophy. "But yeah. Death pretty much always sucks."

Nadia thought about that for a bit, then shook her head. "Not really. There've been ones I've wanted to change, but so far, I haven't really been able to figure it out if it was happening right then, you know? Like . . . what happened with Bel. The timing's always off." She frowned. "You don't think you're really going to turn into a vampire, do you?"

Cassie nodded. "Yeah," she said. "And even though I was on the winning side... I lost it all."

"No." Parker laughed a little, turning the cigarette over and over in her fingers as she looked off the edge of the roof. "I just caught a glimpse of myself, in a mirror yesterday, looking like this one I knew. A real nutjob." She looked back at Nadia. "Maybe it was the expression. It's not something I'd like to emulate."

Nadia's frown deepened. "Okay, but you weren't all . . ." She waved her hand around her mouth a bit, making a growling face. ". . . Right? Because, um, I have those, and it can really, really, really suck."

Remembering some of the things Cassie had said the last time they'd talked, Nadia supressed a shudder. "That definitely happens, yeah."

Parker looked sympathetic. "No, not with the face." She held out her fingers. "Had the nails going, though. Dru favored razor-sharp manicures. I could feel them digging in, at the same time mine were growing just as long." She cocked her head. "Are you still having strange dreams too?"
