Fifth floor common room, Saturday night

There was a common room. It had a Nadia in it. It had a TV that was on, playing . . . I dunno, something, and it had a whole slew of magazines and old books and things laid out on the floor, as well as scissors, tape, glue, paint, glitter . . . all sorts of crafty things.

Nadia was working on a collage. Amazing what boredom can do.

"Ah." Yeah, Nadia didn't get it. "Not a scrap book. What's up, Billy?"

"Not much, had detention with the principal today."

"Ooof. What'd you do?"

"Won the lottery. I feel almost obligated to actually earn it someday."

"I've never understood that lottery thing."

"Yeah it seems pretty bizarre. Are random undeserved punishments supposed to intimidate us?"

"Something like that. The guy who was principle when I first got here liked that kind of discipline. Then the others just . . . kept it going, I guess."

"I don't think it works as a disciplinary tool. Fortunately detention's kinda fun."
