5th floor Common room, Sunday afternoon

Tributary was far too loud in River's head, but got even louder when she was upset. Consequently, keeping her happy was a priority when escape wasn't possible. And Tributary wanted popcorn and cookies.

In the common room River made a large pan of popcorn without the lid on, then started making tuna and marmalade cookies.

"When I find my daddy I'll ask him if he's got his spinny-ball with him - everybody can make that fly!" Bronwyn nods and bounces. "I got to fly inna shuttle in space! But I didn't get to drive."

"We fly around a lot." Tributary nodded. "Captain Uncle Mal has a spaceship all his own and we fly around and do crime sometimes. But not so much anymore because Daddy has moral high-ground issues."

"My daddy's a policeman," Bronwyn frowns. "Crime is bad."

"Some crime is okay." Tributary said. "Specially if we're robbing from the government and helping out the border planets. Or us. Jayne says we're the unfortunate so we need helping hands stuffed full of cashy money."

"You don't blow up planets do you?" Bronwyn asks with narrowed eyes. Hey, in her experience that's what criminals tend to do.

"I think that's unpossible." Tributary said. "Planets are too big and 'splosives are 'spensive."

"If you have a big laser you can blow planets up. Daddy says Earth nearly got blowed up lots of times."

"The laser would have to be super big or really really really reallyreallyreallyreally hot." Tributary bounced. "Does your daddy tell fibs?"

"No!" Bronwyn frowns. "Lying's being mean! And there's no yelling or being mean. It's in the Rules."

"Rules are made by The Man." Tributary nodded. "So it's okay not to follow them."

"'cept for the 'no touching guns' rule. That one is okay."

"My daddy is a *cop*," Bronwyn points out again. "He *is* The Man. I'm s'posed to follow the Rules."

Except the ones involving signs that say "KEEP OUT", because those ones don't apply to her, obviously.

"Whoa." Tributary shook her head. "We don't like the cops. Mommy is scared of them and Daddy just avoids them because sometimes they put him in jail for being a hippie and that's not fair. But we're not s'posed to call them pigs even though my Nana does. Daddy says it's dis-pectful."

"I know a Piggy!" Bronwyn bounces. "He has a cafe! Only he doesn't sell human food. Only alien food that I tried once and my tummy didn't like it so I didn't eat there again."

Tributary leaned in closely. "Do you think it was alien food made out of humans?"
