Jackalope campfire -- Saturday evening

After he'd got sprung from the clinic Dean had headed back to the cabin, fed Hunter and then spent the afternoon resting and surfing the 'net on his minicomp, trying to stick to things that he didn't really need two hands to do.

But that got old after a while so here he was out at the campfire (which he was able to start one handed, thank you very much), carefully putting marshmallows on a stick with the one hand he didn't have in a sling in preparation to toasting them.

"You're definitely safe to try here," Sam said reassuringly. "And no one will think differently of you. The people here are kind of amazing in that respect."

"Yay." Charlie relaxed a little more. "Dean said you had some abilities too? Yours sounded cooler than mine." Especially the one that can kill people.

For all that Charlie relaxed, Sam got more tense.

"He...uh, he told you about that?" Sam asked, trying to sound casual about it and only halfway succeeding.

Charlie's eyes widened, and she hastily said, "I won't tell! I know what it's like. I told him some pretty personal stuff, so he was telling me about your family, and your mom." She swallowed. "If, if you want, I'll tell you what I told Dean, to make it fair." She didn't want Dean's brother scared of what she might say, or worried about what she might do; especially not when she *did* think she understood how he might feel about his abilities.

"You don't have to do that," Sam said, shaking his head. "I just...the whole vision thing is kind of new, and I think Dean isn't really freaked out by it like I am. Which I guess is why he's willing to tell people about it when I'm not. I just didn't realize he'd said anything to you. It's not exactly a secret, it's just something I don't usually tell people about unless I have to."

Charlie nodded at Sam, her expression serious, and said, "I ... won't mind if he tells you what I told him. I just don't like to talk about it. So I'd rather not go through it again." She looked away, at the flames of the campfire, then back at Sam. "Nothing really freaks Dean out, does it? I mean, I told him about the telekinesis, and he wanted to know if I could bend spoons."

Sam laughed. "Yeah, that sounds like Dean, all right," he said, with no small amount of brotherly pride. "He's pretty fearless, partly from growing up the way we did, and partly from just being Dean. Unless flying is involved, and then he turns into a little girl," he added, smirking.

"He's afraid of flying? Oh, now that, I never would have guessed," Charlie said, wildly amused. "How can he be afraid of flying when psychos with knives and serial-killer ghosts don't phase him?"

"I don't know," Sam replied. "I think he doesn't like not being in control of his own traveling. He's kind of a control freak that way. If you ever want to get him in a good mood, let him tell you about his car."

Now she was really giggling. "I already let him tell me all about Blue Oyster Cult and AC/DC. Does he get really into describing the car and how it runs, and all the things he does to keep it looking nice and shiny?"

"Oh God, yes. I sort of understand his attachment - it's a classic Impala that's been the family car since before Dean and I were born - but there's a line between liking a car, and talking to it like it can understand you, you know?"

Charlie's giggling ratcheted up, then tapered away into hiccups. "You're lucky, though. I wish-- Anyway," she interrupted herself. "You sound like every little brother I've ever heard of. How old are you, anyway?"

"I just turned 15," he said. "I'm going to be a sophomore in the fall."

"I'm going to be a junior, I turned sixteen in March. You're not much younger than I am." She grinned. "So I can't treat you like a little brother just because Dean is my Big Brother. Too bad. I always wanted one."

"I don't know, you might be better off without a little brother making your life complicated. Not that I ever do that sort of thing to Dean, of course."

"Of course!" Charlie chuckled. "And I'll take your word for it, although I think Dean likes being your older brother. God knows he's good at it with me."
