Salamander Campfire, Saturday Night

A little research and a quick shopping trip (which he probably shouldn't have taken, since now his back was hurting a little bit) had netted Anders a nice cast-iron Dutch oven. Said Dutch oven had then been cleaned and seasoned, and was now nestled comfortably in the coals at the Salamander cabin campfire, a six-cupcake baking tray filled with chocolatey batter inside.

There was a pitcher full of more cupcake batter on a nearby log, oven mitts and tongs near the fire, and an Anders happily sampling the results of his campfire-baking test run.

Would it have been easier for him to just go down to J,GoB and buy cupcakes? Sure. But dammit, he'd wanted to find out if he could do it. So there.

"I hear one little whimper out of you. . . ." Bel threatened.

Anders sighed and got up to kiss Bel in hopes that it would at least distract him for a minute. "You don't have to worry about me so much, honest."

"You got slashed because I couldn't stop that guy," Bel said. "I'm gonna worry until you're healed."

Dammit, Anders had to hug him for that. "Seriously, best boyfriend ever," he said, grinning insanely.

"I protect what's mine," Bel said gruffly, relaxing into the hug.

"And I'm yours, huh?" Anders nuzzled at his shoulder, grinning some more. "Can't complain about that. Kinda like it, really."

Bel had to bite his tongue to keep a few comments from coming out. He didn't want to spook Anders again like he had the other day. "Good," he finally said. "I like it, too."

Anders could have said about a half dozen embarrassingly mushy things right about then, but he didn't. "Love you," he said instead. "Want to help me clean up here?"

"I'll handle the heavy lifting," Bel insisted, giving Anders a kiss before he moved away.

Anders laughed. "I know better than to argue with you on that," he said, wrapping up a few cupcakes to take back with them and, when he went inside to wash up his utensils, leaving the rest inside the cabin for the denizens of Salamander who actually lived there.

"I'll make this up to you when I'm better," he promised, realizing as he said it that he'd been promising that a lot. He figured he had a lot to make up for, anyway.

"When are the stitches coming out?" Bel asked, following him inside.

"Monday or Tuesday, I think," Anders replied, quietly so as to not wake anybody. "Jerkface doctor who looks like you said a week and a couple of days, and we got out a week ago. My gods, I want a shower."

"Not enjoying the sponge baths?" Bel said, smirking.

"It's not that I don't enjoy any chance to have your hands all over me," Anders said dryly, "but I miss being able to rinse off."

"We can go in Monday then," Bel said. "I'm pretty sure that's Wilson and not Dr. Asshole."

"You know," Anders said offhandedly, "he might look just like you, but I don't think he's as hot as you. 'cause he's a jerk."
