Fifth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Evening

Once again, there were appetising scents emanating from the fifth-floor common room. Ronan was in another cooking mood. This time, it was the rich and spicy scent of Mexican -- well, technically Tex-Mex -- food, grilling chicken, sweet chilies, and a dash of cumin, with sliced bell peppers and onions in another pan. Ronan was still chopping and preparing, but already on the counter was an array of tortillas, and various moddable toppings that people might wish to put on their fajitas.

Ronan shook his head. "They say it in England, too," he said. "Or so I'm lead to believe, having not spent any time there."

"There's definitely some England there, then." She paused. "I think. Oh, well, I'm using it anyway, unless it's copyright, but I don't think it is."

"No, I definitely doubt that 'cheese toastie' is copyrighted," Ronan said, grinning. "I don't think you have anything to worry about."

"Good. Although now? Totally thinking of copyrighting it now. You use it? Bam. I get money."

Ronan chuckled. "I'm not sure it works that way," he said. "You'd have a bit of difficulty proving that you came up with the phrase, I think."

"Mmmm," Turtle's mouth twisted in a thoughtful frown. "That's a good point. On the other hand, though, with enough money, you can 'prove' anything you want." Wink.

"You can prove that you came up with a phrase that's been in common usage for longer than you've been born? That must be a lot of money."

"Well..." Turtle shrugged a little. "You think the people who've actually copyrighted phrases were copyrighting things no one else before them has ever said?"

"I'm not certain phrases like that ever get copyrighted, exactly," Ronan said. "I think you're looking more for a trademark. Which is something completely different."

"Pooooossibly," Turtle said, slowly, uncertainly, not used to being potentially out-talked on matters such as these.

"Well," Ronan said, "copyright only covers intellectual works that are original works of ownership, and doesn't include short phrases. Trademarks are for words, logos, or phrases that identify a company or a specific product particular to that company. Of course, 'cheese toastie' isn't a specific product particular to any one company, so."

"But it could be," Turtle pointed out, the product gears turning in her head. She did need to start planning a potential new product for next year's Young Entrepreneurs, after all...

Ronan raised his eyebrow. "You're going to trademark a name that's been in common use in several countries for many years? Unfortunately, I don't think it works that way," he said.
