"I'm, uh, Edward Elric," he said, trying to remember his name after a second look at the girl. "Nice to meet you."

"Inara Serra," she offered her hand. "Are you a new student, Edward?"

Yeah!" he said, taking her hand with a grin. "Since the beginning of the summer. You?"

"Me too," she smiled back at him. "It's a bit of an adjustment, but I like it. How was your weekend?"

"It's pretty strange," he agreed. "Ahhh, calm mostly. Spent most of it reading."

He really should have looked more embarrassed at telling a pretty girl that fact. Dork.

"Really? What were you reading?"

"Some alchemy books my brother brought from home," he explained. "Haven't seen them in a while and needed to refresh my memory."

"You're reading about alchemy? Isn't that," she lowered her voice, "a fraud?"

"No, it's a science," he said, only flailing slightly. "Well, it is in my world. This one, it's not too developed."

"I thought it was physically impossible?" Inara asked, trying to remember the little she knew on the subject.

"It's just changing matter into other matter," Edward explained. "You can't end up with more or less than you started with. And you have to understand the composition of both what you're changing from and into."

He glanced around the common room and grabbed an abandoned notebook. Concentrating for a second, he clapped his hands together in front of him and turned the notebook into a small metal trinket box.
