Shooting range, Friday morning

River posted the safety rules for the first time.

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

She'd never been on her own here before, but it felt like a good step. Perhaps the practise itself wasn't as essential as reminding herself what she could do when she had to. She enjoyed this.

On her return she'd brought the Navy Colt Jane had given her to the weapon's locker, and now she picked it up, slowly turning the weapon in one hand.

[Shooting range is open, but thread with River and Jack locked to them.]

"Nah, I'm just a quick learner." He grinned back at her and lowered her hand, but didn't let it go just yet, holding it loosely enough that she could easily pull away -- if she wanted to. "So, Jo Harvelle, tell me about yourself. What brings you here, to the wonderful world of Fandom."

"My mom sent me here start of the year," Jo said, quite happy to keep with the hand holding for now. "She thought it'd be good for me to keep away from the kind of people who hang around the roadhouse back home."

His grin got a little bit wider as he rubbed his thumb across her knuckles. "And how's that working out?"

Jo chuckled. "Considering that she was mainly concerned about the hunters, and John Winchester is a professor here? Not exactly like she planned."

"Not much ever does. Why I never plan anaything." He kissed the tips of her fingers and opened his hand. "That way you're open for all sorts of surprises."

And somewhere across Fandom, Ellen was quite possibly wondering why she wanted her shotgun.

"And if you're lucky most of them'll be good. Or at least survivable."

If Ellen could read Jack's mind right then? She'd already have it loaded.

"Good is more important than survivable," he said, leaning a little closer. "So far I've always managed both." He grinned wickedly. "So, Jo Harvelle, do you have any plans for tonight?"

"Sounds like you lead an interesting life then, Jack Harkness," Jo grinned back. "Nothing that can't be moved around."

"Caritas? Tonight? Around eight? You and me, a few drinks, a little conversation," he suggested. "I'll tell you all about my interesting life. Maybe even show you some of it, if you find yourself that way inclined."

"Sounds like a plan," Jo replied, after thinking about it for a moment. "I look forward to tonight."

"I already am." He flashed her another grin, this one more than a little smug, and walked backwards to his alley, never taking his eyes off her. "I'll see you tonight, Jo."
