Shooting Range: Tuesday Afternoon [after workshops]

The first thing Jack did upon entering the Range was post the Safety Rules:

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

He might have posted them with a little more care than he usually did. And, for once, he didn't immediately grab his guns. Instead, he spread his arms wide and said, "Welcome to the Shooting Range. What do you think?"

"Should I stand back? Give you some room?" Cedric asked, not wanting to crowd him.

"When I'm ready to start, yeah, you need to be a few feet away. But for now," he set all but one of the clips down, "I want to show you how to load it. Ready?"

"Ready," he said, keeping his eyes on the gun and the clips.

Jack, gun pointed down range, slowly slipped a full clip in and then racked the slide, making sure Cedric could see what he was doing. "Now it's loaded. That's the safety," he said, and pointed to it. "Always make sure it's on. Always. Never take it off until you're ready to fire."

"Complicated," Cedric muttered. "I've got it."

"Okay. Stand a bit behind me, not too far, make sure you can see." Jack was grinning hugely, because not only did he love this, he was not at all adverse to showing off, just a little. "Tell me when you're ready for me to start."

Cedric did as asked, taking a few steps back and watching carefully. "Ready."

Very aware of Cedric's presence, Jack breathed deep, settling without thought into the correct stance, raised the gun, flicked off the safety and fired - just once - putting a round through the dead centre of the target.

He held off on firing again, waiting for Cedric's reaction.

Cedric blinked. "Wow. That happens quickly."

"You haven't seen anything yet," Jack told him, glancing over his shoulder. "Ready?"

"Yes," he said, nodding once.

Jack turned back, sighted, and started firing, pulling the trigger smoothly until it was empty. With a long sigh he flicked on the safety, lowered the gun, and hit the button to retrieve the target, stepping out of the way so Cedric could see it.

There was a diagonal line of holes across the target, almost perfectly straight, crossing the bullseye.

Yes, he was looking a little smug.

"You're quite good at this," Cedric remarked, leaning closer to the target. "That's a lot of damage."

"I've had a lot of training, and a fair bit of practice," Jack told him, studying the target. The line could have been a little bit straighter, he decided. "A lot of Agents prefer lasers or sonics - I've got a sonic blaster, actually - but I prefer a pistol. Real bullets, and yeah, they do a lot of damage."

"I don't want to try today," he decided.

Jack set the gun down and turned to face him, leaning back on the counter. "You don't have to try ever, if you don't want to," he said seriously. "If you decide you want to, we'll ease you into it. Slow and smooth. But for your first time, I think you've done great, Cedric."

"Thank you," he said, smiling. "For showing me."

"My pleasure. Thanks for giving it a chance," Jack replied, stretching a little. "Now, I'm guessing you've probably had enough of this for one day. What about I get everything squared away, and we go find something you'll enjoy." He smiled slowly. "Maybe you could show me some more magic."

"I'm not using the Accio spell on your clothing," he laughed.

Snickering, Jack pulled off his safety gear and scooped the gun and clips up. "Damn, you've seen through my cunning plan!" he teased as he stowed the safety gear away and retrieved the cleaning kit. "You'll just have to use your hands, then."

"I can do that," Cedric said, pulling off his own safety gear. "Much more fun anyway."

"Just put them in there," Jack nodded at the locker, "and I don't know. You've shown me a few spells that could be a hell of a lot of fun." He grinned down at the gun as he started to clean it. "Depending on how much concentration you need."

"There are a lot of fun spells," he said, stowing the equipment carefully. "Are you wanting to distract me?"

"Maybe a little bit," he admitted, and wiped his hands on a rag. Satisfied, he very carefully put his gun away, closing the door on it with the same twinge he always felt. He really hated not being armed.
