Normally Zuko would train with his real dual blades, but this morning he had picked out two of the lighter practise swords to move through his usual drills as he waited for Jo to turn up. He pretended to ignore and of the commentary Trick had been giving even if he did agree that it might be fun. Not that he was going to admit that out loud.

Zuko twisted to the side, pushing her arm away with the blade she had blocked and using the space it created to hit her side with the other sword.

Jo didn't really have much room to manoeuvre and winced as the sword connected.

Zuko moved back again, giving her more room and waited for a moment to see what she wanted to do.

Jo feinted with a high slash at his chest, before throwing the knife low and hard at his foot.

Zuko winced as it hit, but he kicked it aside before looking up at her. "You don't give up," he remarked.

By this point Jo was breathing heavily from the exertion. "Not really," she said, smiling slightly. "You'd pretty much have to kill me first. Technically, I think you did."

"It was an unfair advantage," Zuko remarked. He stepped back to the knife, picking it up on the tip of his blade and held it out for her to take.

Jo grinned and took the knife. "Which I agreed to, so I can't call foul there."

"No," Zuko agreed and paused. "What's a bowie?"

"Hunting knife," Jo said, holding her hands about a foot apart. "Usually about this long, can be a little longer though."

He nodded in understand and went to put the practise blades away. "I still prefer swords."

"I can see why," Jo said, going to pick up her practice knives. "But where I come from, these and guns are more practical."

He definitely liked guns less than he did knives. "I don't really need any weapons."

"Most of us aren't that lucky, I'm afraid," Jo said, checking the knives for damage before she put them away. "Plus pure iron'll work better against a spirit than your fist will."

Zuko frowned. "You can't hurt spirits."

"Maybe not where you're from," Jo said. "But where I am, you can, and they can hurt you back a lot easier."

It seemed weird to think you could hurt a spirit with mortal weapons. "I've seen the Ocean Spirit," Zuko said. "It crushed my Nation's fleet and could hurt people easily, but it couldn't be hurt back."

Jo blinked. "Ocean spirit? Most of the spirits where I'm from are more like ghosts, I mean there's demons and things like that too," she said, frowning. "Professor Winchester might know more about that kind of spirit though."

Zuko shrugged. "That's avatar stuff. The spirits live in the Spirit World, but most people don't go there." He knew the rumours that his uncle had been there, but he never really asked about it as somehow it didn't feel like his place.

Jo nodded. "Definitely different to back home," she said. "Avatar?"

He wrinkled his nose. "The one person who can bend all the elements. He's just a stupid kid."

"Yeah, you've pretty much lost me here."

"In my world, some people can bend the elements," he said. "I can bend fire. Katara bends water. The avatar is the only person who can master all four elements."

"Right," Jo nodded. "And him being a kid is a bad thing?"

It was when he kept kicking your ass. Not that he was going to say that out loud. Zuko shrugged. "It doesn't matter."
