Shooting range: Saturday afternoon

First thing Jack did was post the rules --

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

--with the extra care he always showed when a particular person was with him. Satisfied with its placement, he started getting out the safety gear.

"You're a very good poster placer," Cedric teased lightly.

Jack flashed him a grin over his shoulder. "I'm a man of many talents," he said, and waved a pair of safety goggles towards him. "Come and get them."

"Right," he said, taking the goggles and sliding them on. "Good thing my head hasn't grown since the last time we did this."

Jack feigned a look of shock, reaching out to slide his hand over the top of Cedric's head. "It hasn't?"

"Stop sounding surprised before I step on your foot," he threatened without any seriousness.

"Promises, promises," he teased, bending his head to kiss him lightly.

Cedric met him halfway and...stepped on his foot.

"You are so mean," he muttered, grinning, and kissed him anyway.

"You didn't think I would," he mumbled before shutting up and kissing him back.

It was with great reluctance that Jack drew back, eventually, trailing his fingers down Cedric's cheek. "I'll know better next time," he laughed and snagged the ear protectors, settling them around Cedric's neck.

He grinned like he'd won a prize or something. "Show me everything once before I try."

Smirking, he nodded and went to get his gun, checking it over quickly and putting it and a box of clips at one of the alleys. "Okay," he said, donning his own glasses and hanging his ear protectors around his neck. "Come here and I'll run you through everything, then you can decide if you want to fire it."

He nodded and stepped closer, concentrating on watching what Jack did with the gun.

Slowly, Jack ran through what he'd shown him last time, how to hold it, how to load it, and then looked at him seriously as he slipped the full clip back out. "And what's the most important rule?"

"Always check to see if the weapon is loaded," Cedric said without hesitation.

Jack grinned at him approvingly. "Absolutely." Checking one last time that it was unloaded, he offered it butt first to Cedric. "Even if I tell you it's not."

"Even if you've just walked up to me shirtless and pantsless with your hair all messed up and a smile on your face," Cedric said. "I still check."

"It does make me wonder where I was hiding the gun," he laughed. "But yes, even then."

"I'm sure you'd find a place," Cedric told him. "Being as skilled as you are."

"True," he agreed and nodded at the gun. "Go on, check it."

He took the gun and carefully checked to see if it was loaded the way he'd been shown. "Not loaded."

Jack had been watching very closely, and now he nodded. "Goo. Very good. All right," he said, leaning back against the wall. "Do you think you want to fire it today? You don't have to."

Even if Jack wanted him to, which he did, he wasn't going to put any pressure on him.

"Can you do it first?" Cedric asked. "Just to show me the grip and all. And then I'll do it."

"I'll do better than that. I'll show you," he held out his hand for the gun, "and then we can fire it together. Your first time's always better with someone helping."

And yes, that was a tiny smirk.

"All right." That sounded good and less stressing on his nerves than doing it alone. He handed the gun to Jack.
