5th floor common room, Sunday lunchtime

Being hungry, River had considered going into town for a Sunday brunch, but had decided on staying in and doing the cooking herself. Rummanging through the cupboards and the fridge she found enough to feed herself and probably half of the fifth floor should they want to. She chopped onion, apples, pecan nuts and biscuits and mixed it with egg and bacon in a frying pan into something that resembled an omelette. It smelled delicious, and she hummed happily to herself, dropping some pieces of apple on to the floor for Berthold to catch.

[open, of course]

Torn between sitting in his room and being happy but horribly hungry or leaving his room to go into town and eat something, Jeff finally made half a decision by leaving his room but not really doing much else.

Until he smelled the food, and went into the common room to investigate.

Jeff blinked for about half a second before he grinned back. Keeping the happy grin in was sort of like trying to stop a flood with a piece of cardboard right now. "They often match up, don't they?" he said. "Mornings and food, I mean."

But then there would be a case of a shortage, like he'd had-- "My girlfriend didn't get eaten by a closet!" Jeff declared, his grin brightening just a little more, "She just got kidnapped by her runaway bride sister!"

Huh.

"...I don't think they're really to be trusted anywhere, are they?" Jeff said, leaning to get a peek at the food. Food! "Unless you've passed the nudity treshold. Then it's sort of life-or-death."

Jeff was momentarily conflicted about what to stare at, River or the omelette. In the end, he opted for the food. "I've frequently felt that way," he said, "It's just when she came back I was starting to think I was imagining things."

"Well," Jeff said, noncommittally, "She wasn't in a closet."

And there went all of his newfound confidence about the closet situation, right out the window. Jeff squinted at River conspiratorally, "...Have you spoken to any of them?" he asked.

Then fumbled for something to eat with. He really needed to learn to pay attention.

"Okay," Jeff said, sort of placidly, then opened the right drawer and got out a fork.

Mmm. Omelette. Not quite plastics. "Mmm," he said, "Omelette. Not quite plastics, is it?"

Jeff paused halfway through a mouthful of omelette to comment, "Working's good. Except for the bit about talking to Gunther."

He trusted River to understand food-in-mouth-speak.

"Mine, too." Even if his advice came down mostly to 'Milkshakes!' and 'can we please have something that doesn't sound radioactive?'.

[identity profile] scary-jeff.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"That might not be entirely effective," Jeff pointed out, "He has a very hard head."

His omelette-chew was more of a thoughtful one. "Perhaps a week," he said, "And we should form a food-advice union."

"I'm not certain Mary would approve of a prawn mutiny," Jeff said, misunderstanding, "But I'm sure we can work something out for the week. Well, two days. I'm not entirely certain Mary would be with us on the mutiny front."

Evie had just finished cleaning her room in case of Surprise Inspection! and wandered into the Common Room in order to make herself some brunch. "River, hello." She gave the new person a curious look, and then said, "I'm Evie, hello."

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ummm..." Evie gave the omelette a considering look. "Perhaps just a taste? I'm not very adventurous, I'm afraid, when it comes to food."

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie took the plate and carefully negotiated a bite.

Ulp.

Smiling with her mouth closed, she chewed and nodded. "It's very original. Yes." Well, it wasn't like she was much a cook, either. Look how her apricot-apple tart cajun pie turned out.

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mmmmm." Evie put the plate down, then moved to put toast in the toaster. "That's always most important. Although people can be *remarkably* picky in any other circumstance, can't they?"

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie giggled, and got out the orange marmalade. "I suppose? Although I have to make a pie for tomorrow's Pie class. I do hope it goes well."

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie gave her a worried look back. "But, what I like may not be what anyone else likes, or may not finish correctly. Even cooking, there's a certain amount of science to it...."

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-08-19 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie turned pink, and admitted, "Or perhaps I can just 'wing it'?"
