The Roof, Tuesday Evening

Pacing was good, and so was smoking (arguably), when you were on edge about something; Anders just happened to be capable, believe it or not, of doing both things at once. And so he was up on the roof, pacing and smoking at the same time, trying hard not to think too much about Sunday's unsettling trip to the Underworld, or how frakking fast these last few days were going.

And maybe, if he thought hard enough, he could come up with a way to freeze time.

. . . yeah, right. He might've managed (even though he couldn't for the life of him figure out how) to knock out a demon, but that wasn't going to turn him into a miracle worker overnight or anything.

Stupid time, and its stubborn insistence on moving forward.

"Maybe," Bel said. "But I think she wants you closer, too."

"I wouldn't argue," admitted Anders. "I'd rather be closer to you than go home. Everything here feels more real to me than the entire sixteen years of my life before I came here."

"What about . . . do you have any family back home?" Bel asked. Leaving his home behind had been relatively easy in that respect; he didn't have any family ties there, unless you counted the Brotherhood.

Anders shrugged. "Yeah . . . but does it make me kind of a jerk to say that I feel less attached to them now? Almost like they're not as real as you guys? I haven't even heard from them in over a year, and it doesn't even bother me."

"Heh," Bel said, pulling out his cigarettes again. "At least they don't want to kill you?"

"Guess I've got one up on you there," Anders admitted with a laugh because he really had no idea about his 'relatives'. "Seriously . . . you'd be okay with me trying to stay? You're not going to end up feeling all guilty about me giving up my life or whatever later on?"

"Dork," Bel muttered, lighting up his cigarette.

"Yeah," replied Anders with a grin. "But your dork. Which, by the way, sorry about pretending like you were my property down there the other day."

Bel coughed on the smoke he had just inhaled. "I should be saying that to you," he managed to say.

Anders laughed. "I thought I was your property, though."

"Not like that," Bel said. "I mean, yeah, part of me wants . . . but no, not like that."

Anders made a vague, nonverbal sound. "Not like that," he agreed. "Had enough of a taste of that -- and don't apologize for that or I'll kick your ass."

"All right," Bel said. "I won't."

Pause.

"Sorry."

Anders sputtered, then bit him lightly on the neck. "Dumbass."

Bel snickered. "You say the sweetest things."

Anders bit his neck again, a little harder. "Yeah, can't you tell I'm trying my best to seduce you?"

Bel squirmed just a little and made a soft noise. He dropped his cigarette before somebody got burned.

Anders laughed softly and hooked his fingertips just inside the hem of Bel's shirt. "Maybe you should shimmer us home now."

"Probably a good idea," Bel said, wrapping his arms around Anders. And, indeed, he did just that.
