Flight Shed [early afternoon]

After whining at talking to his father, Luke emerged triumphant with the keys to the flight shed and permission to take the shuttle up later that day.

And not that he thought he was rusty at all, but he didn't want to fly like a complete spaz when he went up with Jo.

So there he was in the flight simulator, racing through the Death Star trench scenario and burning off a little nervous energy.

The door to the shed was open.

Seeing the flight shed open as he walked about campus, John headed in to find out who was flying.

"Hi, John," Luke called, not taking his eyes off of the simulation in front of him.

Since there hadn't been anyone around to watch him, he hadn't been holding back at all on what he could do.

And he was kind of brilliant at flying.

"That's some awesome flying," John said, watching Luke's run. He'd seen him in action during class over the summer, but he was still impressed.

Luke grinned, looking a little embarrassed. "I'm a little out of practice," he said. "I almost didn't get through the run."

"And I thought you were king of this run," John said.

"It doesn't account for Han showing up to save me at the last moment," he said, freezing the program, "so I have to pop the proton torpedo down the hole and spin up before Vader gets his shot off, which wasn't how it happened in the real world."

"I didn't know that part," John said. "You should edit it into the program."

Luke grinned. "It's a training program," he said. "We don't want pilots to get used to expecting someone to randomly arrive to save them."

He flipped through the simulation options. "I should probably try one I'm not quite so familiar with, huh? My father has uploaded a ton of stuff from the Clone Wars."

"I guess it's better to think you're in it on your own," John said. "Less of a shock when you get shot down quickly."

"Battles out of the war?" he asked, curiously.

Luke nodded as his eyes scanned over the lists. "Mostly battles he was in, I think," he said.

The list kept going and going.

"...he was busy," Luke said a little faintly.

"Must've been a pretty big war," John commented. "Or he was popular, given what I've seen and heard about his piloting skills."

"Probably a little bit of both," Luke agreed, picking a battle labeled simply as "Coruscant."

The screen in front of them exploded into a flurry of thousands of fighters and dozens of capital ships.

Luke's jaw dropped and he reached to freeze the program. "How do you survive this?" he gasped.

John stared, "Yeah, I don't think I would...but it looks like a heck of a lot of fun!"

"Let's die spectacularly, then," Luke said with a smile very much like his father's, pushing a series of buttons to switch the program so that John could be his wingman.

"I'm all for a spectacular death," John grinned, grabbing a helmet and getting in the simulator.

"If we last longer than fifteen seconds this first try, I'll buy you a beer," Luke promised.

"That shows great confidence," John said. "But I'll take it."

Luke unfroze the program and immediately spun his ship hard to port to avoid a collision with the fastest little ship he'd ever seen.

"They're being flown by droids," he told John, checking his readouts.

John was surprised not to be immediately killed as the program began. "No kidding," he replied, rolling his ship out of the path of one. "What's our goal, here?"

"Not dying?" Luke replied, taking a few shots at a droid ship that wasn't moving fast enough before glancing down at the readouts.

"We're heading for that capital ship," he said, "five o'clock high. Rescue mission."

"Gotcha," John replied, and then he collided with a droid ship.

"That was fast," he muttered to himself.

Luke consulted the chrono. "Twelve seconds," he teased. "Again?"

"I'm ready," John said, more prepared than last time.

"I had no idea he was this good," Luke muttered to himself, restarting the program and relaxing into the Force.

Sadly, John had no Force, so he set his jaw and dove his ship quickly as soon as the program began.
