Second Floor Common Room, Saturday after the Memorial [2007.11.17]

Jack had taken over the common room, had nearly cleared out the pie supplies section of the store, and was elbows deep in flour.

This was his memorial service. One week ago, Bart was making pies. Now, Jack was making some in his honor.

There was a sketch of Bart in one corner with a candle burning in front of it.

[Open as common rooms are. Pies are moddable.]

"I had the same idea," said Hoshi, shuffling into the common room and collapsing on the couch. She was still feeling pretty weak from being so very sick.

"I'd be happy to help," said Hoshi, getting up from the couch. "How much do you know about making pies?"

Hoshi snickered. "I have my own secret recipe. Is there any flour and margarine?"

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not exactly a family recipe," said Hoshi with a shrug as she measured out her dry ingredients. "One of my tutors used baking a pie as a practical chemistry lesson when I was four."

"Well, they weren't sure if I could handle particle physics at that age. I proved them wrong," said Hoshi, mixing the dry and liquid ingredients together and getting a dough that she could knead.

"Not at the end of the particle physics lesson. That's when we got to build a fusion reactor," said Hoshi.

"Well, yeah. That's a pretty standard junior high science project so you can get the basics down before moving into warp field dynamics," said Hoshi. She finished kneading the dough and put it in a covered bowl, then put it in the fridge. "I'll let that chill for a little while, since that is easier to work with when it's cold. In the meantime, I think I need to sit down. It's been a long week."

"Never mind. It's not important," said Hoshi. She wasn't sure if she was up to giving a lesson in space travel today.

"Did you make it to Communications class on Thursday? I was pretty out of it by the end of the week, so I have no idea what was going on in Town Hall towards the end."

"That doesn't sound good," said Hoshi, frowning. "Thank goodness I realized something was wrong and headed for the clinic before it got really bad."

"I can't believe we were here making pies with Bart a week ago and now he's gone," said Hoshi. She was on the verge of tears.

"It's a good idea. I was thinking the same thing," said Hoshi.

"You know what I'll always remember about Bart?" said Hoshi, trying to smile. "We talked about what a wonderful woman his grandmother was and how she taught him English. Then I asked if he could teach me his language, Interlac, and I had some trouble with it and he started laughing. So I asked him how long it took him to learn English. He said he only took him ten minutes." There were tears running down her face even though she was smiling at the memory.

People. People in the common room.

People who sounded like they were trying to make pie.

After trying to hide in her room for a bit, Anemone gave up and entered the common room, the box holding her private stash of baking supplies balanced on her hip. "If you used my strawberries, we are going to have words, Burton."

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only if you used them properly." Anemone put her box on the floor and proceeded to tie her hair back. "Please tell me you know flour from salt from sugar?"

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Considering the LAST time I made pie in here with a boy, I ended up covered in pie, flour, and some of the pies had salt instead of sugar? I'm being paranoid." Anemone finished pulling back her hair and grinned at him. "I'd rather keep the pies in the pans or in our tummies, if at all possible."

"He's using those ready-made pie crusts from the store," Hoshi called over to Anemone from where she was sitting on the couch. "I made the fresh stuff, but it's sitting in the fridge while I take a little rest."

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
"That's because he's a boy heathen," Anemone responded, checking the fridge. "What do people think of chocolate oreo pie? I feel the need for sugar."

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
"That sounds positively yummy," said Hoshi, grinning.

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Awesome." Shoving the cookies into a ziplock bag, Anemone grabbed her rolling pin to crush them into bitty bits. Ah, violence. How soothing. "So did either of you go to Communications? Because I'm pretty sure I skipped."

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't," said Hoshi. "By Monday night, I was hooked up to an IV and not going anyway, except when they moved us to Town Hall from the clinic."

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
"You went down on Monday too, huh?" Anemone shook her head. "I'll ask Ms. Next if she shows up in the library on Tuesday."

"Oh gods, I missed work."
