Fourth floor common room: Thursday evening

Karal was cooking. No, the common room wasn't on fire. No, the stove hadn't exploded, or the fridge. There were no broken plates or twisted spoons. Or eggy books.

That would be because what he was cooking, or rather about to cook, were pancakes. He was hungry, he was starting to become quite bored, and - really - pancakes were perhaps the universal food. Flour and water and apply heat. Simple.

Applying heat was to be done via frypan, and the flour and water had been mixed, with only a little bit of mess, in a bowl.

:This should be entertaining.: Altra was watching from a safe distance away.

"Glory, how difficult can it be?" Karal replied as he spooned some into the pan, then frowned at the sudden sizzle. "Maybe I should turn the heat down."

"I'm failing to make dinner," Karal replied, then looked up and smiled. "Hello, Meg. How are you?"

"It's not that bad. Really." she said, looking over at the frying pan. "I'm doing well. How has your break been?"

"Dean is helping me, thankfully. We should be able to avoid burning anything down. I hope," he said. "And it's been good, overall. Quiet, but enjoyable. Did you go away for the holiday?"

"No, I spent it with Dean's family. It was fun, different from what I usually do for Christmas." she said. "What about you?"

"I stayed here. Christmas is a very new thing to me, it's not celebrated on my world, so I spent most of the time reading or with my horse."

"Sounds relaxing," she said. "I gotta ask, what's Christmas like from an outside point of view?"

"It is," he had to stop and think, "interesting. It seems confusing, because it's a religious celebration, but I've not seen anyone celebrating that aspect of it. It seems more about trees and gifts than anything else."

"Yeah, that sounds about right," she said. "I usually go to Church on Christmas Eve but I skipped out this year. I've been kind of bad about the whole going to Church thing lately."

"There's the church in town, but there's no priest." Karal smiled gently. "Well, there's me, but I'm not the right kind for you. I don't think it matters where you pray, though. Does it?"

She smiled and shook her head. "I don't think it matters at all."

Karal beamed at her. "Then there's no reason to feel bad!"

"You do have a point," she said. "I refuse to feel bad about it now."

"Good!" he said happily. "And if Dean manages to salvage them, you can have a pancake." He frowned. "Which hopefully won't make you feel bad."

"You can't go wrong with pancakes," she said. Even ones that smelled kind of weird.

"That's what I thought! It is flour and water - how difficult could it be? I've never really had to cook for myself," he admitted. "which is why they were more of a mess than a pancake. As it turns out, they can be quite difficult."

"It just takes some practice," she said. "Everybody goes through their fair share of kitchen mishaps."
