4th floor common room, Saturday afternoon-evening-night (1/5/08)

After labeling and putting away all of his groceries (not that he didn't trust Michaelangelo; it was the police cadet in him), Sky had decided to seat himself in the common area rather than shut himself up in his room. His only company at the moment was a bowl of freshly-popped popcorn, the precious Grape Judas Squishy he had purchased earlier from Turtle & Canary, and the Fandom High manual, which he was in the process of memorizing back-to-front. He thought about bringing out his CD player or turning the TV on, but decided he liked peace and quiet better.

And anyway, he had a feeling "peace and quiet" didn't last too long around Fandom.

Dean wandered out to the common room with Hunter, giving the cat and himself a change of scenery, pausing when he saw the unfamiliar boy sitting there. "Hey," he said.

Startled, Sky jumped a little, thankfully keeping both popcorn and Squishy balanced. He looked up from his handbook at Dean, then glanced at the cat. Sky had a bit of a soft spot for cats, though he'd never admit it.

"Hi," said Sky. "I'm Sky Tate. I just moved in here yesterday. And you are...?"

"Dean Winchester." Dean gestured at his cat. "And this is Hunter. We've been here for a while."

"Ah. Nice to meet both of you," said Sky. He set down his manual and stretched, deciding to take a bit of a break. Memorizing could wait. "Popcorn?" he offered, remembering his manners and holding out the bowl.

"Thanks," Dean said, putting Hunter down to explore before taking a huge handful of the popcorn. "So, studying already?" he asked around the mouthful.

"The handbook, yeah," said Sky. "I like to know rules and regulations back to front, preferably before I start. Comes from living in a police academy for so long, most likely." His hands were creeping toward the Squishy. Suddenly he felt very energetic, but he tried to push it aside as he sipped up more Grape Judas goodness.

"Yeah? Police academy? That sounds very.... legal."

Sky nodded. "It's a great place," he said, fondly thinking of the Space Patrol Delta Nebula Academy and what he'd known of the Earth Academy before its destruction. "Of course, being away from Earth for a few years wasn't so great, but the Nebula Academy almost felt like home. And now that I'm back on Earth, I almost miss it." He shrugged uncomfortably. "Fandom doesn't seem as bad as I was convinced it was going to be, though. Do you like it here?"

"Hell, yeah," Dean said enthusiastically. "My family's been on the move most of my life. This is the first place that's felt like home since I was a little kid."

"Oh... that's good," said Sky. Unsure of what to say next- indeed, he was finding that he was worse at making conversation with new people than he'd like to admit- Sky took another sip of Grape Judas to buy some time. "Ah... what classes are you taking?" he asked Dean. "There were some... interesting-looking ones here. Certainly nothing I'd find where I'm from."

"Classes here are definitely not like anywhere else," Dean said enthusiastically. "Last term, my brother Sammy ended up streaking through town to get an A."

Sky's face fell at this proclamation.

"Steaking?" he repeated incredulously. "You're kidding me, right?"

Finally having finished putting his things away to his satisfaction, Makoto had made sure that he looked good enough as a girl before wandering the dorms a bit more. He stepped into the common room a floor above his, and figured he might as well try some more socializing as a girl.

"Hello?"

"Nope," Dean said with a smirk. "'Course I wouldn't have done it if I'd been in the class, but Sammy was all 'the world will end if I don't get an A.'"

"Hey," Dean greeted the newcomer. "New here, I take it?"

Sky couldn't suppress a groan. He should have known there was going to be childish behavior in such a place... At least running around naked is better than plagues and dinosaurs, I guess, he thought.

"I wouldn't do it, either," said Sky, "I like getting good grades, but not at the cost of humiliating myself. I'd take a B over that any day."

Sky looked up from the handbook as Makoto spoke, then stood up and courteously straightened himself.

"Miss," he said politely. "I'm Sky Tate, I just moved here yesterday. And you...?"

"Is it as obvious as all that? Or have you just been here for a while?" Makoto asked with a smile. "I'm Makoto."

He smiled at the 'Miss', it was always nice to know he was doing it right. "I'm Makoto Amano," he said, remembering to switch the order of his name around so it fit with the regular conventions in America. "And I just arrived yesterday as well. How are you finding it so far?"

"Well, Sammy's a bit of a geek. It interferes with his common sense sometimes," Dean said. "But most of the classes I've taken have been pretty cool."

"Dean," Dean replied with a grin. "I've been here a while, yeah. And the pretty girls all tend to stick in my memory."

"Hmm, that's good. And as long as nothing like that happens in a class I'm in, I can deal with people making idiots of themselves just fine, too," said Sky. His Grape Judas was almost empty now. Woe.

"Nice to meet you, Makoto." Sky offered her the popcorn bowl before answering her question. "I'm having mixed feelings about this place, to be honest. The people here are nice enough, but hearing stories about dinosaurs and plagues... and naked people running through town to get good grades... I'm just not sure. We'll have to wait and see, I guess. It's only my second day here."

"Flatterer," he accused him, purposefully blushing a little, "I bet you say that to every girl."

"What classes are you taking?" Dean asked curiously.
