Third Floor Common Room: Afternoon

After realizing that the most insane person in the world is teaching his so-called criminal justice class, Ron decided that if wanted to truly become an Auror someday that he needed to do addtional research.

Which is why he's watching reruns of Crime and Punishment. Because that's about as much "research" he's able to force himself to do.

That and the "Doink-Doink" transition sound is hypnotic.

Alex had one more free day before her first class on Thursday and was kind of excited about it.

She wandered into the common room, wondering if anyone was out and about.

Ron looked away from the TV long enough to see that there was someone he didn't know.

He gave her a wave and a friendly. "Hey. New kid?"

"Hi," Alex smiled and waved back. "Yeah, one of the newbies. I'm Alex."

"I'm Ron. I just started here last term so I'm still a semi-newb," he explained. "Everyone here try to break your head with the weird stuff?"

"Nice to meet you, Ron," Alex smiled warmly. "Kind of, yeah," she nodded. "I'm attempting to wrap my head around some of the stories I've heard."

Ron shrugged. "I'd say about 90% of them are true as far as I can tell. Honestly it's not as strange as some of the things that happened at my old school. The weird thing for me has been trying to get used to these technical things," Ron said with a wave towards the TV.

"So I've been told," Alex nodded, wondering about it. It wasn't like she couldn't believe it. "Oh, yeah? Nothing really strange happened at my old school," she shrugged. Really, it didn't.

"Where did you go before here?" Ron asked, even though he probably wouldn't have any idea what to do with the answer.

"I went to school in Manhattan," Alex answered. "Not a huge highschool in New York, but big nonetheless."

"Ah. I went to school at Hogwarts," Ron replied. "Which is a fairly big school but probably not like the one in Man-haaaatan."

"Hogwarts?" That name was unfamiliar to Alex. "No, I guess not."

"Not many muggles have heard of it," Ron explained. "It's a school for wizardry so it's not like you'll find a brochure for it."

A school for wizardry, huh? Alex was intrigued. "Sounds like a cool place."

"It has it's moments," Ron said. "What do you think of Fandom so far?"

"I'm liking it," Alex grinned. "Haven't had any classes yet, but I do have a job, so it's nice."

"Oh?" Ron asked. "That's pretty quick of you. Where are you working and what classes are you taking?"

"Yeah, I held a job back at home so it kind of helped with the normalcy," Alex shrugged, grinning. "I'm working at the Magic Box and I'm taking Fandom Invasions, the Art of Cool and My Country. How about you?"

"I'm taking criminal justice and that Cool class as well," Ron replied. "And I've heard about that Magic Box place on the radio. I should see if you guys have anything useful there. Do you do magic?"

"Nice," Alex grinned, nodding in approval. "Uh," she paused, not sure how to answer that. She figured the truth wouldn't hurt. After all, he was a wizard, too! "Yeah, I do. I'm a wizard in training, actually."

"Oh wicked," Ron replied. "That's one nice thing about being here, you don't have to worry about people freaking out too much if you do magic out in the open."

"Definitely," Alex nodded, grinning happily. "Back home, it was a secret kept within the family. Not even my best friend could know."

Yeah, that? Was kind of tough.

Ron winced at that. "Ouch. That must have been rough."

"A bit, yes," Alex nodded. "And I haven't told many people here. Actually, I think you're the first person I've admitted that to."

"Well it's nothing to be ashamed of really," Ron said. "Though I can see why you'd hold off on talking about it if it was taboo back home."

"Oh, no, I know that," Alex nodded, getting that. "I just wasn't sure how people might react and I didn't want to put my family at risk, you know?"

But, she was starting to get the sense that people around here were really accepting.

Jack waved at the unfamiliar girl.

Alex waved back, smiling slightly.

"Are you new?" he asked with a smile. Yes, that was a valid question. Yes, Jack needed to get out more.

"I am, yes," Alex nodded. "I'm Alex," she smiled, offering out her hand.

"Jack. Jack Burton," he said, giving her a hearty handshake. "Uh, sorry for asking. Guess I don't get out much. "What grade are you in?"

"Nice to meet you Jack," Alex smirked. "Don't worry about it. I'm a freshman."

"Oh, wow," he said with a smile. "So you're here for the long haul?"

"Yeah, looks like," Alex admitted, not entirely sure how she felt about that.

"Well, keep your eye on the horizon, watch out for trouble, and you should be good. Keep the sunny side up," he said with a grin, that kinda faded. "Um. Sorry. Should stop reading the truck magazines."

Alex smiled, nodding. "I'll definitely do that. No apology necessary," she shook her head. "It's good advice."

"Great!" he said. "I'm full of good advice." No, no he wasn't.

"I'm in room 208, so if you have any problems, bring 'em to ol' Jack Burton," he said with a grin.

Jack wandered in after work. "Hey," he said with a wave.

"Hey, yourself," Ron replied.

"Is it just me or are there a lot of new students here?" he asked, looking around as if they were just suddenly going to appear.

Ron looked over Jack as if he were daft. "Um. Yeah. New term, right? Don't they always show up then?"

"I...guess I didn't notice," he said with a stupid look on his face that was totally different from his normal look really. "Think I had a bug or something this weekend. ...I missed the Welcome Party, right?" Jack was bummed.

"Yeah, that was last Friday," Ron replied.

"Aw, man. That's...that's just crummy. Was there food?" Jack looked chagrined. "Lots of food?"

"It was a picnic," Ron said dryly. "So yes. Food a plenty."

"Now I'm going to have to wait until the next semester for that much food!" Clearly, this was a crisis. He sighed and sat on a chair arm. "Meet anyone new? Anything exciting happen?"

"Yes. It's a tragedy of epic proportions," Ron said dryly. "And I met Evey. She's part of the sibling program they have here."

John looked sheepish. "I've forgotten who my Big Brother is. I think it was my roommate's brother. The old roommate. I'm not sure if Robin has a brother. What's she like?"
