Lana was hanging out in the common room. The TV was on, more for background noise than anything else, and she had a book. She was just tired of being alone in her room and hoped that if she was out people would come along to distract her.

Robin wandered in, pondering the wisdom of certain classes. "Maybe being cool isn't all it's cracked up to be." he said to himself.

"I wouldn't know," Lana said. "I'm not sure I've ever been cool - except sort of by proximity when I dated the quarterback at my old school."

That surprised him. "Really? I thought you were cool."

Lana laughed. "Well, not here, certainly."

"I'm just wondering if the type of people the teachers of the cool class, are the kind of person I want to be."

"If you have to really think about it, then they're probably not," Lana said quietly.

Robin nodded. "Plus I'm not sure if grown ups would really know what's cool these days anyway."

"Depends on the grown-up, I guess," Lana said. "My former guardian, Lex, would certainly know that stuff."

"What about Barney?"

"Barney?" Lana asked, not having any idea who he was talking about.

"One of the teachers. Nevermind. Whatcha reading?"

"A sort of historical fantasy," Lana said. "Really fascinating."

"Ooh, that sounds neat. What's it about?"

"Elves and humans during the time of the Inquisition," Lana explained.

"Oh wow." Robin thought that sounded soooo cool. "Though the Inquisition part sounds kinda scary."

"It's not an incredibly light-hearted book," Lana admitted, "though it has its moments."

"Are the good guys winning?"

"At the moment? No," Lana said. "But in real life no one won, really."

"Oh. Yeah, good point. Makes me glad I was born in the 70's."

Lana nodded. "Every time has its issues, though. I figure I've just been lucky."

"Guess it depends on where you're born too." he nodded thoughtfully.

Lana nodded. "Definitely."

"What classes are you taking this semester?"

"Conflict Management, Criminal Justice, Ethics, and Lawyering Up," Lana told him.

"Oh wow, those sound tough. Are you thinking of being a lawyer?"

Lana shook her head. "Forensic scientist or criminologist," she said.

"Both sound really cool. Did you take Abby's forensics class?"

Lana nodded. "And I studied with a CSI person as well."

"Sounds like you're gonna have a heck of a head start."

"I'm hoping the experience will give me that extra edge I need to get into my first choice college and study with Dr. Henry Lee," Lana said. "It would be like having a dream come true."

"I don't think I know him. I'm guessing he's pretty famous in crime fighting circles?"

"He's probably about the best in the world," Lana said. "Police officers say he can walk into a crime scene and just see things that their crime scene techs who've been over the scene a hundred times never noticed. That's what I want to learn."

"Ooh, like meta Sherlock Holmes."

"Maybe," Lana said. "But humble about it. And he can teach it. His students are in demand everywhere because he teaches them to look at things differently."

"I'm sure you'll get in." he assured her.

"I hope so," Lana said. "If not my second choice is in DC and Abby Sciuto's boss said he could get me an internship of some sort at NCIS with her if I'm nearby."

"Well I'm rooting for the first one, but if you do the second, tell her I said hi."
