The Gym, Thursday Afternoon

He arrived in the gym on time and was a little surprised that Jaina wasn't already there. He considered that he was early, but really, there wasn't much of a chance of that. She'd seemed rather serious about this whole sparring thing.

Or at least she'd seemed interested in knocking him down repeatedly - same difference.

Ever a patient guy, John took his time stretching out before taking a few swings at the heavy bag while he waited.

"You look so lonely," Gavin said when he wandered into the gym. "Your hair even looks lonely."

John turned to look at him. "How does hair look lonely?"

"It's not as high as it usually is," Gavin said, glancing at John's hair. "It's missing something."

John self consciously reached up to pat his hair. "It's not supposed to be high. It's just there."

"I'm messing with you," Gavin said and waved a hand. "What're you doing?"

"I'm writing a paper on the benefits of eyesight," John replied.

"And here I thought you were practicing to give more lap dances," Gavin said flippantly.

"Sorry to rain on your parade, but you won't be getting another free show," John said.

"Well, damn, my heart is shattered," Gavin said, deadpan. "I'll have to find another guy to give me lap dances."

"I'm sure Karal would be more than willing, for you," John said, thoughtfully.

"Not until he gets a haircut," Gavin said and shuddered in remembrance.

"Something happen to his hair?" John asked, raising an eyebrow.

"It's...very, very large," he said, waving his hands around to demonstrate. "And curly. It looked like it's own entity."

"But why?" John was a little scared. "Fandom weirdness or is he just too lazy to get it cut?"

"He was on some adventure with Jeff and they apparently went to places without hairbrushes or shampoo," Gavin said and shrugged.

John would die under such circumstances. "That's...disturbing."

"Yeah, he came and hid under my bed," Gavin said. "And that hair, I thought it might come alive and eat me."

"Was he hiding from his hair?"

"No, he was hiding from Jeff's dog, Turtle and anyone from the worlds he visited," Gavin told him. "I think he might have fallen on his head once or twice."

"You'd think he'd be safe in his room," John mused. "Assuming Aravis was around to protect him."

"I think it was more that Jeff knew where his room was and he wanted to hide," Gavin explained. "So, he came to my room and I made him tea and made fun of his hair."

"You can make tea?" John focused on strange things.

"Karal taught me," Gavin said. "He's made me some before and I just remembered how he made it. It's not bad and it's good for cold days."

"I'll remember that for the next time I'm feeling cold and lonely," John teased. "You're like straight from an international breakfast beverage commercial."

"Shut up, ass," Gavin said, frowning at him. "That was an insult, right? It sounded like one."

"No, only the biggest, strongest of men drink international breakfast beverages," John laughed.

"And I bet you use more crap for your hair than my girlfriend does," Gavin said, going for the old standby of making fun of John's hair.

"I don't use any crap in my hair," John made a face. "And now I'm understanding the smell of the girls' room a little better."

"Have you slept there too?" Gavin asked and, wow, that was a weird thing to ask another guy.

It was a weird thing to be asked. Possibly weirder to have to think about the answer. "Um, yeah."

"Me too," Gavin said, making a face. "Not in the same bed as you, though. Obviously. Um. I forgot we share this similarity."

"Definitely not the same bed," John agreed. "It's strange a strange thing to have in common. But at least I'm roommate-free."

He glanced at the clock on the wall, wondering where that girl was.

"Me too," Gavin said, happy to get off the fact before they started talking about how they hadn't been in the room on the same day together. "You waiting for someone?"

"Yeah, Jaina was supposed to join me," John said. "We're apparently sparring now."

"She late?" Gavin asked. "Or you just super early? And you're gonna get your ass kicked."

"She's late," John replied. "And yes. I'm acutely aware that my ass is grass. Thanks for the reminder."

"Well, I just thought I'd get that in before she left you crying on the mats," he said and patted John's shoulder.

"Yeah, why does everyone think I'm going to cry?" John didn't get that at all.

"I don't know," Gavin said, laughing a little. "Who else has said that?"

"Andrew," John said, not amused. "He seems to think I'll need a shoulder to cry on. Like some sort of abused spouse."

"Awww." Gavin really liked Andrew now. "Well, maybe he doesn't know your secure in getting your ass kicked by your girlfriend?"

"It's not for sure I'll get my ass kicked," John whined complained. "It's just likely with the whole Jedi thing."

"If it makes you feel any better, she'd kick my ass too," Gavin said and patted John's shoulder again.
