Fourth floor Common Room, Sunday evening

After taking Sammy out for a run and a game of catch, Dean grabbed all the fixings for phenomanl subs and headed down to the common room. Making himselfa couple of huge sandwiches, Dean settled down on the couch to watch the American Gladiator finale.

Every now and then, he'd toss another piece of deli meat to Sammy.

He nodded, though he wondered what the Random Fandom weirdness he might be referring to could be.

"I'm sure he's a very nice Dog. I'm sorry I didn't meet him previously."

...no, it didn't occur to him that this might be the Sam who was in his cooking class with him. Why do you ask?

He looked at Dean.

Then Sam.

Then Dean.

"You mean that's Sam from Miss Lulu's cooking class?"

His eyebrows both jumped up at once before settling again.

"Hmm." The Witch would have been fascinated. "Can he speak? Or was he turned into a dog as opposed to a Dog?"

He realized only after that he might have been rude by speaking of Sam as if he weren't there.

"If you can understand," he added, "my apologies. I don't mean to talk about you as if you're not there."

Sam barked at Liir and wagged his tail, hoping that would translate to something close to Don't worry, it's okay.

He nodded back. Quite a few years with Killjoy and more with the monkeys meant that he got the message rather clearly. Whether he was sure that Sam knew what he was saying or not is another matter.

"Thank you."

Then he turned to Dean.

"And this happens... often?"

...

"Aha."

If he ever turned into a monkey...

"That's... I think Elphaba would have melted herself to hear something like that."

It was all he could think to say.

"My-- the Witch. That I used to live with. She spent all of her time trying to teach monkeys to become Monkeys, make them speak. Make them more than they were. The idea of people changing, just like that. Of magic like that just happening."

He shrugged.

"So common place, I suppose. There's something of--"

He didn't know how to explain it.

"The line between animal and Animal and human," he said finally, "is a very delicate thing."
