The Roof: Early Morning on Monday

Mel sat on the edge of the roof, her legs hanging over the ledge as she watched the sun rise over Fandom.

It's not a sight Mel typically seeks out as she's usually up late into the evening wandering through a graveyard or the preserves but nevertheless there she is watching the sun come up with a contemplative look on her face.

It's not a sight Sokka normally sees, either, as he's normally annoying the roomie with his snoring right about now. But he's looking for Mel, and so here he is.

He walked up behind her, quietly, and said "Hey."

It was a beautiful morning, and he didn't want to break the moment, just yet. But he reached out a hand to lay on her shoulder.

"It's beautiful," Sokka replied, with a smile of his own. "The pollution makes it pretty, though, doesn't it? More colors? And you haven't lived 'till you've watched the sun rising behind an iceberg. But this... this here, there's something perfect about it."

He sat down next to her and put an arm around her. After an ill-advised glance downward, he clung a little tighter than necessary.

"No, I'm fine," Sokka told her, conveniently misunderstanding. "I'm BETTER than fine. I'm AWESOME. I'm -- I like being this close. With you." He gave her a squeeze and bit his lip. "But, uh. I... It's all kind of sudden, and you seem a little..."

He trailed off, and looked at her worriedly.

Sokka blinked at her. "Oh. OH! ...Yeah, maybe a little. But only a little; I'm used to heights. Good with them."

He gave her a playful pinch. "Too hot to handle's a good thing. I mean, yeah, maybe I'm having a little trouble keeping up, but I kind of like it like that. No, I meant... I meant..."

He paused, trying to figure out how to phrase it.

"What happened Thursday night. I mean, not Thursday Night, but Thursday night before Thursday Night... Whatever it was, it was something big. And it's eating at you."

Against all evidence to the contrary, he added "I AM pretty observant, you know."

Sokka raised an eyebrow. "Well, aside from the fact that you're awesome, and could resist the manly charms of anybody you wanted to? You mentioned a bad dream."

He shrugged. "You don't have to talk about it, if you don't want to. I just thought maybe you'd want to."

"Oh, I AM, I am, don't get me wrong," Sokka hurried to reassure her. "I mean, if you gave me a bowl of chocolate, a juicy steak, a Squishy, and a lesbian porn marathon, I wouldn't be as happy as I am right now. But... You're NOT happy, not the same way."

He gave her another squeeze. "You're not the first friend of mine stuck with prophecy crap."

"You got stuck having to save the world from evil?" Sokka asked. He was worrying more and more, now that she kept avoiding the issue. "It's a lot to have to deal with -- I know someone who ran away and hid for a hundred years when that happened. It's easier if you... I don't know, share the burden, and stuff?"

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I'm not," Sokka said, touching a hand lightly to her cheek. "I'm distracting you and comforting you, but whatever this is, you're still thinking of it as something you have to do by yourself. You don't."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I can DO distraction," Sokka replied with a smirk, leaning in for a passionate kiss.

"But I'm also pretty experienced at being the Chosen One's sidekick. Whatever's going on... You're not alone."

Sokka bit his lip and raised an eyebrow. "I can and will ask Dawn what's going on, if I have to."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka facepalmed. "PROM! Right! I almost forgot! You're coming with me, right? You don't have to wear a dress, but I insist on at least one dance."

He sighed. "Okay, so Dawn doesn't know? Then I won't tell her. Look, it's... I..." A shrug. "Did the dream involve your past lives? Or a really condescending monkey? That's how Aang usually knows it's important."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your brother?" Sokka asked. "Okay, yeah, no wonder you don't want to talk about it. I mean, I don't know MUCH about him, but" -- he gave her another hug. "He shows up again, kick his butt."

Sokka shrugged. "The way Aang tells it, half the time he's in the Spirt World, there's this wise old monkey spirit there being snotty at him. He gets condescending monkeys, I get kidnapped by a giant panda-monster. Doesn't seem fair, does it?"

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka shrugged. "Bears. With laser guns."

"... But I'm guessing that means you haven't seen the monkey. So that's good, at least."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Way rocketship," Sokka agreed, leaning his head against hers and snuggling closer. "Rutting rocketship. Just a dream, then. Nothing to worry about."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka grinned at her mischievously. "...then we should probably get down off the edge."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka kissed her, and stood up. "It's not the heights," he purred. "It's that if I 'distract' you, neither of us will be able to balance very well."

Sokka looked around at the roof nervously, and then smirked at Mel. Fine, then. They'd see who backed down first.

He stepped closer and toyed slyly with the hem of her shirt. "If we fall tragically to our deaths, it's your fault," he breathed.
