Fourth Floor Common Room; Saturday Afternoon.

Cal had slept in for three reasons: the first was simply that it was a Saturday, the second was because yesterday had been a very long day, and the third was because he had trouble sleeping anyway. It was being in a new place, with a lot of new people, in an entirely new situation. He was used to it, of course, so he was used to losing sleep over it at first.

Besides, it was nothing a little coffee couldn't fix. He rubbed the back of his neck as he drifted down the hall and into the room with the couches and the TV and the kitchenette and started rummaging around for what he needed.

While...trying not to step on the tortoises.

Wait...

Cal frowned at the little golden tortoises swarming at his feet right now.

Hopefully that was something a little coffee could fix, too.

"Would they be sending you hate letters though?" she asked, tilting her head. "That's the real question! And well, I guess I didn't think about it. This is the first civilian school I've ever attended. So, I don't really know what other schools would teach."

"Well, I've never gotten flowers before," Cal said as he shrugged, "so the whole point seems kind of moot. What other kind of classes did you take there?"

She blinked at him. "Never?" Ino echoed, wondering how that happened. "Well, let's see, we did history, geography, taijutsu--that's hand-to-hand combat to you--, tactics, strategy, ninjutsu, weapons training, cooking, culture, flowers, sewing, basic first aid."

A beat.

"All the basics really."

"Definitely got your bases covered there, yeah," Cal commented, looking impressed, although mildly so, and wondering where the kitchen sink was.

"Well, you've got to know it all to be a ninja," she said off-handedly, nibbling on another Oreo.

Yeah, Ino was kind of getting eyed skeptically a lot by Cal in the short span of time they'd known each other, wasn't she?

"Ninja?"

Call it her bubbly contribution to breaking his brain!

"Well, yes," Ino grinned at him. "That's what I am after all."

"I...was not aware of that," was all Cal could really think to say, and, well, it was quite true. He tilted his head slightly, wondering exactly what sort of ninja things she could do.

And here all he got to do in junior high was play field hockey.

"I wasn't expecting you to be," she told him, "'less you're from my world the forehead protectors don't mean much." And hers was around her waist, besides.

Cal's eyes went immediately to Ino's forehead, too. The fact that the only thing covering was a lock of hair did not particularly help her in the Oh, yes, of course, I believe you department.

"Forehead protectors?"

She rolled her eyes, undid her protector from her waist and tied it neatly around her head. "Like that, see? I just like it better around my waist."

"But then it's a waist protector," Cal pointed out.

"Noooo, it's a forehead protector being worn around my waist."

"How's it going to protect your forehead down there?" Cal normally would have deadpanned that statement, but, for the sake of Ino not thinking he was completely dense, he gave her a little look, pursed lips and teasing eyes, that showed that he was mostly just being a brat. "Maybe you should go back to your ninja school and retake that lesson."

"It's not like my forehead needs protecting here," she pointed out, "I do wear it when it'd be smarter to." Sometimes. "And you don't have to wear them on your forehead."

Then she stuck her tongue out at him.

Oh, well, la-de-dah, sticking out her tongue. Clearly, Ino was a ninja of maturity, too.

"Then they shouldn't call them forehead protectors. Maybe just...protectors. Or...shiny metal things on bandannas. That'd be much more appropriate."

Only when she needed to be.

"Don't blame me," she said, "I didn't name them. I just call them what they've always been called."

"Oh, and if everyone jumped off the Empire State Building," Cal threw out there, his voice taking a slight mockery of his mother's, "would you do it, too?"

She gave him an innocent smile.

"I don't even know what that is."

"Really big building," Cal explained helpfully. "Really tall. It would probably hurt lots and lots to jump from it."

Pause.

"Even for a ninja."

She laughed. "So I wouldn't jump off it then--I'd run down the side of it."

"See," Cal, his deadpan quite strong, sighed, and threw up his hands a little. "I knew it. You're just a rebel. Wearing your forehead protector on your waist. Running down the sides of buildings when everyone else is jumping to their deaths..."

"It's more interesting that way," she said, with a toss of her head.

"Not for the forensics guys who would clean up after the jump," Cal offered, but his face seemed to gain a slight bit of color as his lower lip disappeared under his teeth. Wrong height, wrong color, but that head toss suddenly felt all too familiar and it sent a little bit of heat through all his limbs, with anticipation with how she would respond to a comment like that.

Ino laughed. "You don't think they'd be interested in the fact that someone didn't make a mess?"
