Sirius Campfire, Monday morning

Gladys had lit a campfire. She didn't get cold -- even if she did, it was probably too warm to need one -- nor did she eat or drink, so it wasn't really of any use to her.

But there was a spot for a fire to be made, and so she had made a fire. It was her first (golems being known more for putting them out than for lighting them), which meant she was learning how to make it better.

Of course, she was doing this by reaching into the flames, rearranging the burning logs, then observing the fire to see if it was made better or worse. Hands in the fire, she regarded it seriously.

Yesterday had been a strange day for River, but better than expected. She was tired, thoughtful and couldn't sleep, so when she saw the clay person next to the fire she sat down next to her. At least there wasn't much mental noise from a golem.

Gavin didn't have a class but he hadn't really paid much attention to those in his cabin last night so he was up and outside early, just to check things.

Apparently, someone was up earlier than him.

Someone big.

Wow.

"Hey," he said cordially, coming to sit near the fire.

Giselle appeared out of the cabin, looking fresh and bright, just as if little birds had dressed her - and they probably had.

"Oh, hello," she said brightly to the stone - thing. "Don't your hands hurt? The fire's hot, you know."

Gladys swivelled to look at her, hands still in the fire. "Good Morning," she said, because politeness was important.

Jo made her way out of the cabin, yawning. "That's... not what I expected."

Her eyes dimmed and flared. "Hey," she repeated. "Should I Say Hey Instead Of Good Morning?"

"Good morning," River said gravely, then added: "You're a new student. I'm River. No longer a student. Graduated recently. Do you like dancing?"

"The Fire Is Hot But It Will Not Hurt Me." She moved another log, and the fire flickered slightly higher. "It Is Important To Make The Best Fire Possible. I Am Learning How To Do That."

Gladys looked at the fire, then at Jo. "What Did You Expect?"

"Only if you want to," Gavin said, smiling a little. "Hey's just a greeting I use instead of good morning. But, good morning works too. I'm Gavin. I'm in this cabin too."

"I Am A New Student. I Am Gladys. If You Are Not A Student Why Are You Still Here?" she asked. "I Have Never Danced." And she was also a bit shaky on the concept of enjoy.

"Oh, that is so nice of you," she gushed.

"Something other than a..." Jo made a guess. "Trooogollum? Tending a fire?"

"Am a TA for Deadpool," she explained. "Dancing is important." River glanced at the golem. "Compulsory and fun." No one had ever seemed to take that slogan seriously.

"We Are Cabinmates, And So I Will Say Hey, Too. Hey, Gavin." She pulled her hands out of the fire. "I Am Gladys."

River raised a hand and waved to Gavin. "Been shopping again recently?" She still remembered the clothes he and Karal fed to Berthold.

"There Was A Spot For A Fire But It Had No Fire. The Cabin Should Have A Fire If There Is A Place For It," she said. "I Am Gladys."

A new girl. River watched her and smiled.

"I Am A Golem And A Student. This Is The Cabin I Am Assigned To. But I Am Tending The Fire." She hesitated. "Is It Proper That There Is A Fire?"

"Nice to meet you, Gladys," Gavin said, smiling just a bit. He thought himself pretty learned when it came to the world but she was unlike anything he'd never seen before. "You're up early. Sleep okay?"

"I Did Not Know Dancing Was Compulsory. Does This Mean I Have Broken A Rule?" Golems didn't worry, precisely, but the glow in her eyes flickered slightly. Rules were important.

"Not with Seely," Gavin said, waving back. "So, yes, but I've kept the clothes I bought because they weren't ugly and loud."

"No. No dancing yet. Might be later. I should arrange something." She was tired, too tired for that, but eventually she would.

"Golems Do Not Sleep, So I Cannot Be Up Early," she explained. "But If This Is Early, Then You Are Also Up Early. Did You Not Sleep Well?"

"Golem, right!" Jo said. "And yes, very proper indeed."
