Cygnus Campfire, Late Thursday Night

An open fire. Alice had started it herself, and was feeding it sticks and branches as it grew into a moderate size. She felt a small thrill of vindication at that; she would not let something as simple as a campfire defeat her. It was controlled. It was safe. She was even considering roasting marshmallows over it.

She was calm, or relatively so, and would welcome company.

After hitting the Sirius campfire, Jamie went wandering again and came upon yet another campfire.

He waved at the assumed new girl. "Hi. Private fire or can anyone join?"

"The fire is for any who'd like to join," she said, nodding to one of the moddable empty chairs. "I've had my full share of others' fires this week. And I shouldn't think private fires would be terribly cheery. More likely to burn out quickly and leave naught behind."

"Thanks," Jamie said taking a seat. "And I agree. Fires are better shared. I'm Jamie, by the way."

"Alice, pleased to make your acquaintance," Alice smiled, giving her head a quick bob. "I should stand and give a proper curtsy, but that seems rather formal for a fireside."

"Don't stand on my account," Jamie said with a smirk. "I'm not that big on formality. I will take a marshmallow or two if you have them to spare."

Since sticking to your own campfire (sometimes) was for suckers and Turtle didn't want to end up pushing the whole shared alcove thing (which was just as comfortable as you'd expect it to be, which wasn't very), Turtle went bouncing around that night to see what was available and wander upon Cygnus.

"Hi, hi! Open for company?"

"I'd be delighted," Alice said, gesturing to a vacant spot around the fire. "I think I could grow to like campfires. They're rather nice for conversation, I must say."

"Definitely one of the nice things about the summer camp setup," Turtle agreed as she ceremoniously plopped down. "The campfires call out more people than the common rooms do, unless someone's making something really yummy." Or perhaps there was booze involved. Then she tilted her head thoughtfully at the other girl. "Have we met yet?" There were just so many to keep up with! "If not, hi, I'm Turtle."

"Makes one think there's something primal about it," Alice mused. "The lure of the fire, come sit and chat a bit, share some exotic food. I have discovered s'mores this week, I must admit those swayed my opinion rather a lot."

She smiled over at the other girl. "I don't believe so. I believe I heard you on the radio. I was curious as to whether you were an actual Turtle or not. I'm Alice, pleased to make your acquaintance."

"Ooooh, radio!" Turtle chuckled a little, clapping her hands a bit. "I love it when my reputation precedes me! And, yeah, no, definitely not a real Turtle, just a girl, and oooh!" Her eyes went wide when it hit her. "You're Alice with the awesome name! I used to tell people that was my name, back home, when they asked why my real name was."

"Hey Boss," Jamie greeted. "What's the good word?"

"Hiiiii, Jamie," Turtle waved back. "And it should be Squishy Profits, even though that's two words, but it's not. We're so down from my projections, it hurts."

And, yes, that was a slight pout.

"Even with the fabulous Grape Judas?" Jamie said looking bewildered. "That's impossible!"

"I know!" Turtle gawked openly. "It's just mind-boggling. Sky taking off after the school year has totally made our profits in that department plummet."

Reno had a bit of a case of wanderlust tonight. He'd had three good classes, he'd gone flying, and there were newbies all over the place that he had to check up on.

So when he spotted a familiar one sitting at the Cygnus campfire, he had to stop to say 'yo.'

"Yo!"

"Hello, again," Alice smiled. "I'm not familiar with 'yo', is that a typical greeting or are there shades to it I ought to become familiar with? I offer a reserved 'yo' back, pending."

"Yo's yo," Reno replied with a shrug and a smirk. "An all purpose attention-getter, if it ain't nothin' else. How you been, Alice? Fandom treatin' you good so far?"

"Can it be used descriptively? 'I had a rather yo day today,' perhaps, or is it meant as an interjection only?" She was now pondering the limits of it. "And if so, is it usually cheery in manner? Not something one would shout when one has dropped a hammer on the toes and needs to be vexed at the universe at large?"

She placed a marshmallow carefully on a stick and held it out over the fire. More hesitant than most people would be; if the marshmallow caught fire, then the stick would, and if the stick did, Alice might. She would drop it and step away, and thus be saved. She hoped.

Reno observed the whole careful ordeal of placing the marshmallow stick for the roast. He made a mental note. Alice was tentative around fire.

Okay.

"I think it's more either a substitute for 'hello,' or it's made to sit at the end of sentences," he mused. "Like, 'Yo, Alice, you been havin' a good day?' or 'I took a walk to the store, yo.' Adds emphasis. Could probably be used angry-like, but only if you're tryin' to get someone's attention to yell at 'em."

"I'm sorry," Jamie said shaking his head. "Cam Mitchell has that phrased trademarked. You're going to need a new greeting."

Reno raised an eyebrow and grinned.

"This Cam guy still around? I'll arm-wrestle him for it if I gotta. Been usin' that word since I could talk, dammit."

Jamie frowned a bit. "Okay. He graduated. I'll let it go."

Turtle's response to the 'yo' included an additional letter that changed the meaning completely.

"YOU!" she said, and pointed her finger at who, through various very clever deductions, figured to be that Reno guy.

Reno's response, in true Reno fashion, was simply to stare.

"Me," he agreed. .... "You?" He pointed back. Girls could be so weird.

"You're the one who owes me big time for covering your butt on Monday!" Turtle clarified. In the same shocked tone.
