Earlier in the day, Ned had decided he'd spent entirely too long holed up in his alcove. Of course, it took him several hours after that initial realization before getting up and out of bed, changing and heading outside, Digby at his heels.

The dog was, possibly, happier than anyone that Ned had decided to get out of his stupid funk. He lit a fire as best he could and took a seat.

He started contemplating baking sweets over an open fire. He decided that would only lead to tears.

"Can I help?" she requested.

"You could stir," he decided, already thinking of the best apple pie recipe he'd seen before. "And eat the apples that I don't use. And talk to me."

"I wouldn't wanna distract you, though," she noted.

"I don't get distracted when I bake," he told her, shaking his head. "Unflappable."

"Bet I could," she said, smiling.

"You couldn't," he said, shaking his head.

"Oh, I could if I wanted to," she replied, nodding.

"I don't get distracted when I bake," Ned told her. "Learned that from my mother."

"I'm kinda takin' this as a challenge," she noted.

"A challenge you'll lose," Ned said, showing a rare confidence.

"You say that now," she said, grinning.

"I'm confident," he said. "About this."

"You ain't seen what I would do to distract you," she pointed out.

"And you don't know how good my apple pies are," he countered.

"I'm sure they're amazing. I'm still just as sure I could distract you," she replied.

"You're pretty confident," Ned observed.

"I know what I'd do to distract you," she told him, nodding. "It's very confidence-makin'."

"We'll see," Ned said, almost excited by the prospect of getting to bake and not even really worrying about Kaylee's distraction. "We'll see."
