Today warranted soup.

It wasn't really the weather that had him making the soup. It wasn't even a desperate desire for something that was in the soup. He just wanted soup today, something warm and tasty and in a big enough quantity that perhaps someone else might be tempted to come by and take some. He wanted to feed someone as much as he'd wanted to cook and there was a sizable portion left.

Liir, for his part, was still working on his broom research for Ino and so was enjoying his portion on the couch in the common room with a couple of the books open around him as he scribbled things into his notebook. The books might look a little odd to anyone who'd walk in, the text blurred and hazy, but he didn't seem to be having any trouble with them.

Alice lifted a shoulder. "Usually, mentioning the asylum," she admitted. "'Hello, I'm Alice, and I spent several years completely, entirely mad.' I'm not mad any longer, but I'm still strange. That's unrelated, I think, I was strange long before I went mad."

"I fly on a broom, grew up with a bunch of flying monkeys for brothers, a crazy old woman in a wheelchair my only teacher, and my mother was a Witch with green skin who was killed by a bucket of water thrown by a saint from another world. This one, incidentally."

He shrugged.

"This place seems to collect strange people."

Well, then.

"I was a Queen, I lost everyone I loved and my own sanity in a raging fire, I once knew a turtle with a bull's-head, and the land I ruled decayed into ruins while I rotted in an asylum. I once tried to slit my own wrists with cutlery. A spoon. It was all I had. Then I cut a bloody path through Wonderland, killing all who stood against me, until I could take down the Red Queen and those awful tentacles of hers. Since then, I've been here."

She considered. "Do you suppose it does so on purpose? Collect oddities, I mean. I received an acceptance for an application I never sent."

He decided that it was best only to answer the last. An extended run of all the terrible things that'd ever happened to him would just be a list of complaints and it would do more harm than good to air them.

"I walked here on my way to enlist in the Home Guard in the Emerald City. This place just picked me up and dropped me into the middle of all this without the last bit of effort. I can't say that I'm upset, though."

"Neither was I," she shrugged. "I had nowhere else to go. Here is better than nowhere, which is a step above the asylum."

"Considering the only asylum I've ever been to, I can certainly understand."
