Second Floor Common Room [Late Morning]

After his first class, Ned had come back to the dorms without much in mind as to what to do to pass the time until his class later in the day.

After talking himself into and out of it several times, he'd finally gathered up some things he'd purchased over the weekend and trundled everything down the hall to the common room. It was empty for the time being.

Before he could talk himself out of it once more, he started baking for the first time in years. A pie, of course. A simple apple pie but it felt good to be baking again. It'd been awhile.

"Apple pie," Ned said, nodding at the new arrival. "I hope you're not allergic to it or anything."

"People are allergic to pie?" John was horrified by the thought. "I'm just glad someone's cooking."

"Could be," Ned said, shrugging. "People are allergic to all kinds of things. Why not pie?"

"Seems kinda sad," John replied. "I mean, being allergic to pie would be like being allergic to coffee. I couldn't imagine. How's your pie coming?"

"It's cooking," Ned said, smiling a little. "I just put in and it should be done shortly. I don't time it or anything. I just check when the filling's good and warm and the crust is crispy enough to stay together when it's cut."

"Seriously?" John was impressed. "You do this a lot then?" Maybe he could learn something here.

"I used to," Ned said, looking a bit evasive. "And then I stopped but now I can start again."

"Good skill to have around here," John said, wondering if he shouldn't ask questions. "At least, from the perspective of someone who appreciates it when there are others cooking. Like me."

"Don't like cooking?" Ned asked, slip sliding around the topic of his past.

"It's hard to like doing something you're not good at," John admitted. "Though I'm told my baking has improved." Didn't count if Andrew had done the majority of the baking though.

"Have you tried baking recently?" Ned asked.

"Well, my buddy Andrew kinda helped me bake cookies," John said. "In the way that he baked and I watched and ate the leftover dough."

"I've met Andrew," Ned said, smiling at that. "I promised him a pie."

"Yeah? He's cool," John smiled in return. "What kind are you gonna make for him?"

"Dunno," Ned said, kneeling down to peek in on the pie. "Something good. I can make just about any pie if I have a recipe."

"Do you make things other than pie?" John asked, watching Ned.

"I can," Ned said, nodding as he stood back up. "Pie's just the thing I'm best at."

"Fair enough," John replied. "Sounds nice to know what you're best at."
