The Roof; Sunday Evening.

Cal had never seen anything like this sky before in his life; he'd be damned if he didn't appreciate it. From the height of the dormitory's rooftop, the view was even better, and it also added a bit of consolation in the theory that, perhaps, if anything did erupt, he was at a bit of a high ground, even if he was pretty sure lava could manage to do quite a bit of damage to the base of a building. Maybe they were far away enough that it wouldn't matter, anyway.

But, God, it was gorgeous. It certainly did wonders to pull Cal out of the reverie that had been holding him back all day about his father. About how the last time he'd seen Milton was when they broke the news about Cal's...condition, how he'd never said a word to him after that, because he'd run away and, by the time he got back, his father had died. He'd called Tessie, but the ensuing conversation was short, awkward, and left him overly thoughtful. Sitting on the roof now with a cigarette between his lips as he took in the electricity in the air, though, he started to feel a little better.

[[ it's a roof; of course it's open =D ]]

"That can't be good."

Mac was too interested in watching the eruption to care that she was stating the very, very obvious. It was kind of amazing, along with being scary as hell.

Sokka walked out onto the roof and gasped at the view. It was even MORE gorgeous from up here. It was, perhaps, the single most beautiful thing he'd ever seen (well, except for Mel naked) and it was poised to deal painful death to all in its path. The inherent irony, poetic as it was, touched his very soul and stirred complex, troubled emotions deep in his heart. Here was Nature, in all its power and glory, neither good nor bad but beautiful and deadly. He couldn't simply let the moment pass without giving voice to something, to some of the many emotions stirring deep inside.

"Uh... Please tell me I'm not the only one who's noticed the GIANT FRIGGING VOLCANO about to kill us all???"

"I have no desire to end up surrounded by molten rock," Mac said simply, quirking a little smile in return as she made her way over to the edge of the roof. "That, staying over there, is my definition of good."

"Yeah, you know what I meant." Sokka moved closer to the edge, took a deep breath, and sighed. "That... That's poetry right there. Real poetry. It doesn't matter how good of a poet you think you are, Nature's always that much better."

He sighed again.

"Just before it kills you."

Mac arched an eyebrow. He was probably right, it wasn't like there was anything they could do about it, now was there?

She hummed vaguely in agreement. "At least it's pretty, right?" With that, she pulled her iPhone out of her pocket to catch a couple of photos while she could.

"Hopefully not?" Mac said, tucking the piece of technology away again. "Considering the stuff this island has weathered in the past, I'm thinking it should be okay..."

Well, she doesn't sound certain, but she is going for optimism at least.

Sokka nodded slowly. He didn't know if Cal could see his nod or not. He wasn't looking at Cal. The spectacle in front of him was too awesome.

"Yeah, it is. The beauty and the deadly, and the irony, and stuff, and... Bah! Words! Words are but a pale, poor substitute for the poetry in front of us!"

"There was flooding, a year or so back," Mac said after a moment of thought. "And the major snowfall we had when I first arrived... But it was mostly the snowmonsters causing the trouble with that one."

"Oh, yeah," Sokka agreed. "You said it."

There was a pause, and more admiring of the view.

"...What are Muses?"

Sokka, rapt though he was, grunted and shook his head. "Nuh-uh. I've seen good before, and that is NOT it."

"I'm still here."

Mac decided at this point to sit down, and hung her legs over the edge of the roof. "I think if there was really a danger, the school administration would've tried to evacuate or something."

"At least it's over there?" Mac? Still trying to stick to the fact that will keep her not freaking out.

"Never seen anything like it," Mac agreed, settling back on her hands to look up at the sky.

"Never expected to, either..." She stared out at the billowing darkness. There was no denying the beauty in it, despite how dangerous it was. "Kind of mesmerising."

Sokka nodded. "Not for very long. Volcanoes are scary things."

He shrugged. "At least there's water between us and it, though. When lava hits water -- get this -- it turns into ROCK!"
