The Roof; Sunday Evening.

Cal had never seen anything like this sky before in his life; he'd be damned if he didn't appreciate it. From the height of the dormitory's rooftop, the view was even better, and it also added a bit of consolation in the theory that, perhaps, if anything did erupt, he was at a bit of a high ground, even if he was pretty sure lava could manage to do quite a bit of damage to the base of a building. Maybe they were far away enough that it wouldn't matter, anyway.

But, God, it was gorgeous. It certainly did wonders to pull Cal out of the reverie that had been holding him back all day about his father. About how the last time he'd seen Milton was when they broke the news about Cal's...condition, how he'd never said a word to him after that, because he'd run away and, by the time he got back, his father had died. He'd called Tessie, but the ensuing conversation was short, awkward, and left him overly thoughtful. Sitting on the roof now with a cigarette between his lips as he took in the electricity in the air, though, he started to feel a little better.

"That can't be good."

Mac was too interested in watching the eruption to care that she was stating the very, very obvious. It was kind of amazing, along with being scary as hell.

"Depends on your definition of good," Cal commented back with a light grin over his shoulders toward her. It was certainly tentative. It was the coolest thing he'd probably ever seen, but it was rather frightening to think that it could end up dangerous as well as pretty. A lot of things were like that, though.

Sokka, rapt though he was, grunted and shook his head. "Nuh-uh. I've seen good before, and that is NOT it."

Hinata offered Mac a smile. "A-At least no one is going to b-be telling us to w-wear bathing suits i-in class if this keeps u-up."

"Hey," Summer said when she spotted Mac. "That's quite a view, huh?"

Sokka walked out onto the roof and gasped at the view. It was even MORE gorgeous from up here. It was, perhaps, the single most beautiful thing he'd ever seen (well, except for Mel naked) and it was poised to deal painful death to all in its path. The inherent irony, poetic as it was, touched his very soul and stirred complex, troubled emotions deep in his heart. Here was Nature, in all its power and glory, neither good nor bad but beautiful and deadly. He couldn't simply let the moment pass without giving voice to something, to some of the many emotions stirring deep inside.


"Uh... Please tell me I'm not the only one who's noticed the GIANT FRIGGING VOLCANO about to kill us all???"

"Nope, sorry," Cal said dully, letting out a slow puff of cigarette smoke toward the incredible storm the near distance. "Only one."

Romeo managed a slight smile for Sokka. It had been a long time since they talked. "Good e'en. Have you heard from Mel?"

Some things were possibly more important than a giant frigging volcano.

Dōjima wiggled her fingers at Sokka as she made her way on to the roof. "Nope, not just you. At least it's pretty?"

It was probably insane, he wouldn't argue that, but the smoke and ash that had been visible all day made Romeo crave a cigarette, and he couldn't stay away from the chance to get a better look at the volcano while he was already ruining his lungs.

So there he was, on the roof, lighter and cigarette in hand. He gave Cal a nod of greeting, one reckless smoker to another, before settling in to take a few days off his life via slow tobacco-scented suicide and contemplate the view.

Cal returned the nod with a lift of chin and then a duck of his head, the cigarette between his fingers lifted in a bit of a toast to bad habits and gorgeous views.

Isabel figured the roof would have the best view of the volcano, so she made her way up there with her camera and a blanket.

Cal was starting to feel like he shouldn't be surprised that he was the only one to think about this vantage spot. He lifted his head in greeting to the girl. "Hey. Welcome to the party."

Romeo smiled slightly at Isabel. "I've seen nothing like this, have you?"

It wasn't often that you got a view like this. Peter went up to the roof to have a better look. He nodded hello when he saw others were already up there.

"Hey stranger!" Isabel smiled. "Come up to enjoy the show?"

Cal returned the nodded greeting with a lifted chin. "I should have thought," he commented dryly, "to charge admission or something when the first other people started arriving."

Mac nodded back at him with a smile. "View from our room just isn't quite as good," she remarked.

She had told Chad-san that she was not interested seeing the volcano. That had, however, only applied when it wasn't so... active.

Hinata stepped out onto the roof, nodding silently to the other people already there.

Cal lifted a hand in greeting. "Welcome to the great big enjoy the insanely pretty active volcano party," he offered.

A volcano was erupting, something Summer had never actually seen before. She figured she might as well get a good view of the possible destruction, so she wandered up to the roof.

"Wow," she said simply as she watched.

"...Yeah," Cal grinned. "I think that covers it pretty well."

"Hey Summer," Isabel waved.

Francine was considering running in circles and yelling that this wasn't happening, after she'd looked out the window towards the other island, but she'd learned from experience that one, it was pretty ineffective, and two, it was liable to get her kicked. So instead she made her way up to the roof, where she could get a better view of that thing over there not not-happening.

"That can't reach over here, right?" she asked nervously of... anyone who was listening.

"I d-doubt it," Hinata said reassuringly. "It'd h-have to go over the water."

It had been a toss up between hiding under the bed or getting drunk on the roof, and Dōjima chose the latter, sticking her flask in her purse and heading up.

Crap. People. Drink later.

"Has anyone started the books on if we end up crispy-fried?" she asked rhetorically. "I'll bet fifty on 'random miracle'."

Romeo went over to kiss her hello, quite possibly taking advantage of the risk of imminent death to give more of a kiss than he normally would in public.

"They would evacuate us if we were to be buried in lava," he said when he could talk again, trying to sound confident. "... I hope."
