Second Floor Common Room [Tuesday Afternoon]

The facts were these: Young Ned had found his way into the common room again after getting bored of his room. He'd come with the intention of baking and, yes, there was something cooking in the oven (but he wasn't going to just reveal his pie choice today).

There was something different about today. Today, Ned had the hiccups. Now, as a boy at Longburrow, he'd been made to just wait them out.

Now, without that supervision, he could try to get rid of them. So, he'd looked up some hiccup cures and was currently attempting to stand on his hand and recite the alphabet in the middle of the common room.

It wasn't working.

Yet.

"I have the hiccups," he said, getting distracted by a particularly aggressive fit of said hiccups and not realizing she had her hand nearby. "Trying to get rid of them."

"Do y'need someone to scare you?" she offered. "That's how I always shake 'em!"

"Does that work?" he asked, perfectly comfortable sprawled on the floor.

"Sometimes," she said thoughtfully. "But see now you're expectin' it."

"I don't know if you could really scare me," he admitted. "Speaking of scary, are you all right and everything? I got your message."

"I'm fine. Went on a field trip," she replied cheerfully. "Played matchmaker, climbed a mountain, did some puzzles. It was fun! Are you okay? You didn't do nothin' stupid and go out where it was dangerous, right?"

"I was in the library," he said, leaving the giant sphinx out for now. "You climbed a mountain?"

She nodded. "And went through a maze. And teleported. And stuff."

"You make it sound so easy," he said, marveling at her.

"Well, I didn't do the teleportin'," she assured him.

He made a face and said, "Still. Climbed a mountain, went through a maze, played..." His slow brain caught him to her words. "...matchmaker?"

"Lee and Toby are real cute," she said, nodding.

"Toby?" Ned recognized that name. "Oh, he's the guy that forgot where he lived!"

Kaylee frowned. "He forgot?"

"He came in here when I was baking a week or so ago and asked me if I knew where he lived," Ned told her.

"He's funny," Kaylee decided. "It was a fun trip, anyway. I mean, we weren't makin' it for fun reasons, but y'know."

"And you're all right?" he asked one more time.

"I might've gotten a little sunburnt," she said, smiling. "That 'nough for you to fret over? 'Cause you sure seem to be looking for somethin'."

"I'm not trying to worry," he denied. "I was just maybe...a little. Worried. A little. I know you can take care of yourself."

She shifted so she could stretch her legs out. "Well, sort of. I was gonna hide if there was shootin' or somethin'. But there wasn't!"

"I didn't shoot anything either," he told her. "I didn't even hold a weapon."

"But you did important library stuff," she said, smiling proudly.

"I didn't, not really," he admitted. "I stood around and other people did things. I just was a messenger for them. I didn't do much at all."

"I ain't one for books an' research," she admitted. "So you were doin' something I can't."

"I'm not helpful any other way," he said, fidgeting with his hands a little nervously.
