Outside the Dorms, Monday Morning

The previous night Jo had gone carousing on Tortuga, but rather than a hangover she'd expected, this morning she had a much more aggravating souvenir.

"Go on," she said, waving her hands. "Scat. Go home."

The dog just looked up at Jo, wagging its tail vigorously.

Ichigo was on his way out of the dorms, most likely in a search for food, when he noticed the girl. He stopped for a moment, watching the scene with some measure of amusement. "Made a friend?"

"He followed me home," Jo replied dryly. "And now he won't leave. Home. Go home."

The dog barked happily, clearly having no intention of moving.

If you asked him, the dog seemed to have decided this was as good a home as any. "Is he from the island?"

The dog would have agreed with Ichigo, he was just waiting for his new human to also come to that conclusion.

"Not this one." Jo shook her head, and gestured in the direction of Tortuga. "Came from over there."

He heard the noise coming from Tortuga the previous night and the whole pirate thing was still slightly unsettling. "Maybe he decided he likes it better here?"

"Maybe," Jo agreed, glaring at the dog, who cheerfully ignored it.

"Oh, I'm Jo," she said, remembering herself. "Jo Harvelle."

"Nice to meet you, Jo," he said easily. "I'm Ichigo Kurosaki. I'm one of the new students." In case that needed clarifying.

"I'm one of the old ones," Jo said. "Anything weirder than pirates happen to you yet?"

"There was that bear who gave me a soda," Ichigo mused, weighing which one was the weirdest. "So... Not really, no."

If you didn't count things that happened back home. "I'm guessing you have."

Jo shrugged. "Our last Vice-Principal tried to open a portal to hell on the island," she said. "It's why we have a new one."

The dog, meanwhile, was taking advantage of Jo's distractedness to sidle closer to her.

Ichigo was quite proud of himself that he managed to keep his cool about this. "I've heard about that. It's not as surprising considering it was a god of the afterlife," his frown deepened with every word that left his mouth.

"The new Vice-Principal isn't, right?" It felt like a valid question.

Meg was on her way back to the dorms when she spotted Jo and the dog.

"I didn't know you had a dog," Meg said, walking up to Jo. "It's cute."

She was coming back from a walk around town and Viki clapped her hands together when she noticed the dog.

"Oh! How sweet!"

"No, I don't think she is," Jo said. "At least she hasn't done anything god-like that I've heard about."

"Neither did I," Jo said, as the dog cocked his head to watch Meg. "Cute's one word for it."

"She could be hiding it," Ichigo pointed out, idly watching the dog who really, really seemed to like Jo.

"Sweet, right," Jo muttered, as the dog immediately started wagging his tail even harder.

That got a head-tilt at her. "You don't think so?" Viki asked. "For he seems quite sweet to me! Look how happy he is!"

"What's another word for it?" she asked. "Other than adorable."

Any moment Jo was going to realise that the dog had shoved his head under her hand and she was absent-mindedly patting it. Annnnnnny moment.

"If she is, she's doing a good job of it," Jo said. "And besides, I think she's too busy dating Professor Kerrigan to start opening portals to Hell."

"Stubborn, mangy mutt," Jo suggested. "He followed me back from pirate island over there."

The dog gave Jo a wounded look. He was not mangy or a mongrel.

"If she's evil she might just be counting on us thinking that," he countered, having no need whatsoever to draw attention to the whole bonding going on.

"Well, I guess he could be sweet," Jo admitted, as the dog rolled over onto his back, wriggling on the grass.

"Awwww," Viki said. "He wants you to pet him! Does he have a name?"

"Aww, don't say that Jo," Meg crouched down to scratch behind the dog's ears. "He likes you."
