Outside the Dorms, Monday Morning

The previous night Jo had gone carousing on Tortuga, but rather than a hangover she'd expected, this morning she had a much more aggravating souvenir.

"Go on," she said, waving her hands. "Scat. Go home."

The dog just looked up at Jo, wagging its tail vigorously.

Ichigo was on his way out of the dorms, most likely in a search for food, when he noticed the girl. He stopped for a moment, watching the scene with some measure of amusement. "Made a friend?"

"He followed me home," Jo replied dryly. "And now he won't leave. Home. Go home."

The dog barked happily, clearly having no intention of moving.

If you asked him, the dog seemed to have decided this was as good a home as any. "Is he from the island?"

The dog would have agreed with Ichigo, he was just waiting for his new human to also come to that conclusion.

"Not this one." Jo shook her head, and gestured in the direction of Tortuga. "Came from over there."

He heard the noise coming from Tortuga the previous night and the whole pirate thing was still slightly unsettling. "Maybe he decided he likes it better here?"

"Maybe," Jo agreed, glaring at the dog, who cheerfully ignored it.

"Oh, I'm Jo," she said, remembering herself. "Jo Harvelle."

"Nice to meet you, Jo," he said easily. "I'm Ichigo Kurosaki. I'm one of the new students." In case that needed clarifying.

"I'm one of the old ones," Jo said. "Anything weirder than pirates happen to you yet?"

"There was that bear who gave me a soda," Ichigo mused, weighing which one was the weirdest. "So... Not really, no."

If you didn't count things that happened back home. "I'm guessing you have."

Meg was on her way back to the dorms when she spotted Jo and the dog.

"I didn't know you had a dog," Meg said, walking up to Jo. "It's cute."

"Neither did I," Jo said, as the dog cocked his head to watch Meg. "Cute's one word for it."

"What's another word for it?" she asked. "Other than adorable."

"Stubborn, mangy mutt," Jo suggested. "He followed me back from pirate island over there."

The dog gave Jo a wounded look. He was not mangy or a mongrel.

"Aww, don't say that Jo," Meg crouched down to scratch behind the dog's ears. "He likes you."

The dog's tail thumped against the grass as he leant in against Meg's hand.

"What makes you say that?" You know, apart from the whole following her home and refusing to leave.

"Well, he did follow you all the way from the pirate island. And he doesn't seem to be scared by your cheerful demeanor," Meg said, smirking. She looked up at Jo. "Why don't you like him?"

"I didn't say I didn't like him," Jo said, flailing a little. "I've just never had a pet before, I don't know anything about looking after a dog."

She was coming back from a walk around town and Viki clapped her hands together when she noticed the dog.

"Oh! How sweet!"

"Sweet, right," Jo muttered, as the dog immediately started wagging his tail even harder.

That got a head-tilt at her. "You don't think so?" Viki asked. "For he seems quite sweet to me! Look how happy he is!"

"Well, I guess he could be sweet," Jo admitted, as the dog rolled over onto his back, wriggling on the grass.

"Awwww," Viki said. "He wants you to pet him! Does he have a name?"

"Yeah, he has a name," Jo said, as the dog looked expectantly up at her. "It's, uh, Jet. Yes, that's his name."

"Like the stone?" Viki asked. "To match his spots? It's very fitting! How adorable."

Well, it had mostly been at random, but if it worked..."Yeah, just like the stone."
