Fourth Floor Common Room, Monday Afternoon

Her room was almost stifling at the moment, with Hoshi-san so busy reading, and Yei making a (lovable) pest of herself and demanding to be let out of the room.

Hinata had, eventually, complied rather reluctantly--the weekend had not been a good one for her all things considered--and gently scooped up her kitten and brought her down to the common room.

Yei? Was ecstatic. Hinata was... decidedly less comfortable about the whole idea, and decided that, at the very least, she could make herself useful by cooking rice and vegetables in the case of anyone coming in.

It was boring on his floor so Gavin came down one floor, peeked inside the common room and ended up wandering in slowly when he saw it occupied.

"Hey there," he said brightly.

Hinata offered him a somewhat tentative smile as she looked up from chopping vegetables. "G-Good afternoon," she said, and the smile became a little more real.

Yei had no such reservations and there was a small, purring, white kitten going over to investigate the new person. Hi new person!

"Hey there," Gavin said, kneeling down in front of the kitten. "Aren't you a cute one? Yes, you are."

Yes, she really really was. Was he going to pet her? She did like that, almost more than anything else, and Mommy was busy cooking at the moment.

Hinata laughed softly, watching Yei. "H-Her name is Y-Yei," she told him.

"Hello, Yei," he said, reaching out to gently pet the kitten. He'd never had a cat so he was a little tentative but it was hard to resist something that fluffy.

"I'm Gavin," he said, looking towards the kitten and back to Hinata.

Ooooh, Yei did like that yes. She purred louder and wiggled happily under the hand. Yes, she was fluffy wasn't she? Who could resist?

Hinata flushed slightly, realizing she'd neglected to introduce herself at the same time as her kitten. "It i-is a pleasure to m-meet you, Gavin-san," Hinata said. "I a-am Hinata."

"Good to meet you too," Gavin said, smiling at her. "New student or am I just terrible at meeting people lately?"

"A-Ano," she considered that. "I h-have been here s-since the beginning of the s-summer, but I d-don't get out t-that much, so I w-wouldn't say that it's y-you being t-terrible at meeting p-people."

"Hey, you're out now and that's what counts," Gavin said, making a few faces at Yei because he was sometimes a dork. "How do you like it here?"

Yei was perfectly alright with dorkiness as long as it was accompanied by pettings and she mewed at him and tried to bat his hand. More pettings please!

"I d-do enjoy it here," she said. "I j-just find all t-the people o-over-whelming a-at times, a-and r-retreat to my room. A-Almost e-everyone has b-been very n-nice, however. H-Have you been h-here long?"

"Going on my second year," he said after thinking about it for a minute. "I was kinda like that when I got here. I didn't venture out much until it started just getting boring reading the same books in my room."

That got a soft laugh. "I a-am out h-here at the m-moment b-because I d-didn't want to d-distract my r-roommate from h-her reading."

"Ah, the one good thing about living alone," he said and smiled. "No one to bother with my silly antics."

"I-I've never l-lived alone," Hinata admitted. "I t-think the s-silence would be t-too overwhelming e-even though I r-rather like the q-quiet usually."

"It can be too much sometimes," Gavin admitted with a nod. "Do you have a radio in your room?"

"I do," she said. "And it d-does help. S-So does Yei."

Hinata grinned a little at her kitten. "D-Do you have any p-pets?"

"No pets," he said and made a face. "My home's a desert so it's not really a good place for pets like kittens to survive."

She nodded. "W-We're in the m-middle of a f-forest back home," Hinata said. "S-So animals a-are very common."

"I kinda wish we were like that," he said and smiled at Yei again. "We get the mix of bugs that bite and sand creatures that no one wants as a pet."

Yei purred more, yes.

"B-Bugs aren't s-so bad," she said, thinking of Shino. "M-Most of them are c-content to l-leave well enough alone."

On the sand creatures though, Hinata wasn't going to offer a protest.

"The biting bugs are bad," he amended. "The ones here are like that too. Mosquitoes that bite you and make you itch."

She started to speak, then stopped, before admitting. "B-Back home, Shino-san's f-family can c-control bugs. H-He's a g-good friend s-so I t-try to r-respect even the o-ones here."

"Control bugs?" That was a new one. "I've never heard of that so don't think I'm being condescending but what kinds of things can you do with a power like that?"

"S-Spy," Hinata said. "T-Track people, use t-them to feed off the e-energy of enemies... There's q-quite a lot that c-can be done."

"Huh." He'd just always thought of them as a nuisance. "How do they communicate with you guys?"

"S-Shino's family h-has a pact with t-them," she explained. "A-And t-this allows t-them to communicate f-freely, though I d-don't understand the s-specifics."

"Wow." He thought about that for a moment. "Cool! I can't do anything like that. I fly ships in my world's military. And I know how to moisture farm."

"M-Moisture farm?" Hinata asked, curiously. The flying was interesting, but she hadn't heard, at all, of that sort of farming.

"Well, Tatooine's a desert," he explained. "A very very barren desert. So, moisture farming's exactly what it sounds like. People farm moisture and use it for crops and sell it."

"Is i-it difficult?"

"Sometimes," he said. "We don't get a lot of rainfall on Tatooine so what we do get is in high value whenever it comes."

That got another nod. "It m-must be s-stressful at t-times," she ventured. "If t-there's even l-less rain t-than normal?"

"Yeah, those aren't fun," he said and winced. "It means food gets tight, money gets tight and we have to take trips elsewhere to trade."

Jack was still wandering around a bit. Yes, still dressed as a pirate. It was not his best look.

"Ooooh, kitty!"
