The Roof, Wednesday Afternoon

Hinata was in a rather quiet, but somewhat bad mood thanks to class that morning. She’d handwavily spent a good while in the Preserve practicing her katas and letting that soothe her mind enough to relax a bit.

It had helped.

She wasn’t so sure now, though, that attempting to work on a report to her father was a good idea. Nonetheless, it would get done. Hinata would never be late with a report. She'd never dare.

Letting out a quiet sigh, she glanced back down at the partially unfurled scroll in her lap and tucked a bit of hair behind one ear. Sulking about never did anything for anyone, Hinata knew. She’d just have to work though it.

[Open as a roof is, yes.]

Hoshi felt like getting a little fresh air, so she went upstairs to the roof. "Hey roomie!" she said, spotting Hinata. "Sorry if I've been a little pre-occupied lately, but I finally finished the translation that was giving me so much trouble."

"It did feel good to finish something so difficult, but I kind of forgot to go to a few classes," said Hoshi. "Professor Kerrigan wasn't so happy about it and gave me a make-up assignment."

Noticing the scroll, Hoshi asked, "Is that a letter from home?"

"Nope, it wasn't too tough. I finished it and dropped it off at her office already," said Hoshi. "I still have to apologize to another professor, but I'll do that in class on Friday."

Hoshi tilted her head to one side. "What sort of stuff do they expect you to report?" she asked.

"Especially when it's the Doctor. I'm not quite sure where to find him outside of class," said Hoshi.

She raised an eyebrow. "That's pretty thorough. I don't think my mother asked quite that much, and I still ended up telling creative little lies. I was worried that if she knew I got stuck in a class about relationships, then she and my dad would demand that I come home."

"The whole reason they kept me out of regular schools was because they wanted me getting advanced lessons," explained Hoshi. "My tutors back home gave me lessons on advanced warp physics. I was worried the classes I got here weren't advanced enough for their tastes. Fortunately, it never became an issue."

"Well, they certainly made me think in a different way," said Hoshi. "They're a lot closer to actual life skills than what I was getting at home. Besides, physics isn't going to be much help if I'm being chased by a hostile alien."

"Oh, definitely. Physics is a good thing to know, especially if you're traveling through space," said Hoshi. "But none of my tutors ever taught me how to fire a gun or use a stapler as a weapon."

"Actually, if my mother had her way, I'd never get to leave Earth, except for the occasional trip to Vulcan," said Hoshi. "She wanted me to be a concert pianist, but it wasn't something that appealed to me."

"I want to join the Starfleet back home as a translator," said Hoshi, smiling. "They're going to need communications officers who can speak alien languages, and I'm running out of Earth-based languages anyway. There's a commander at home who's helped me get into their junior-level training programs. He's the one who gave me Porthos, actually."

"He is a very good man," agreed Hoshi, blushing. He was also twice her age, if time was moving at the same there was it was here.

Hoshi chuckled nervously. "He's definitely someone I look up to and admire," she said. "That's why I'm happy to take care of Porthos for him."

"And he's definitely been an inspiration," said Hoshi, still blushing a little bit. "You're not speaking from experience, are you?"

"Mmm-hmmm," said Hoshi, noting the blushing. "I think there's something you haven't told me."
