Tiniest Penguin Campfire [evening]

Kaylee was back to her old fight: roasting things over a fire.

She was rapidly learning that s'mores were doomed to be messy -- not that she minded, but it was something to remember.

Today, though she was trying something new, and had an assortment of fresh fruit along with the marshmallows and chocolate and graham crackers. She was curious as to whether pears or apples would toast well.

Strawberries, it turned out, did not.

"An' how would you cure me of my neglected...ness?" she wondered, eyeing him and smiling.

"Well..." He wasn't sure if she wanted specifics or just a lot of macho bluster. "Take you for a smoothie, first of all. You'd have to have your first one with someone who knows what he's doing."

"An' you're a expert?" she checked.

"At all kinds of things," he said and smiled at her. "And I'm always willing to help those who need introductions to things like smoothies."

"Well, ain't you a saint, helpin' people like me out," she said, smiling and going along with it.

"Well, you know, I'm new," he said, shrugging like he was taking on the weight of the world. "I figure I gotta earn my keep somehow. If it means showing pretty girls smoothies, then I think I can do that."

"Such a burden," she tsked, shaking her head in sympathy.

"But one I am proud to take," he said, hand to his chest. "And I don't even know your name, how rude of me."

"Kaylee," she volunteered, fluttering her fingers at him in a little wave. "You ain't too rude, don't worry. I was prepared to just think of you as the Smoothie Fella forever and ever."

"Hannibal King," he said, matching her wave. "And I've been known by worse things than Smoothie Fella. You new too?"

"Just got here at beginnin' of summer," she told him, nodding. "Are you newer'n that, or older?"

"Newer than that," he said, nodding. "Very new. So new that I'm still finding my way around the island. Got any tips? Places to go? People to meet?"

"Well, if you break stuff, bring it to Stark Industries on Fridays. That's my one big tip," she said quickly, because that would never hurt. "Hmm. I'm still learnin' my way 'round, really, an' I ain't picked out any places to go since the island keeps movin'. But I ain't really from here, so everything's kinda new an' overwhelming."

"Stark Industries," he said, making a mental note of that. "I'll have to come by, come see, bring something broken so you can fix it."

He'd break anything he could find.

"And you've never been to the mainland? Never seen anything else besides the island so far?"

"Been to the mainland a couple times, but not since we moved again," she told him, shaking her head. "I don't even really know where Australia is."

"You know, I know where the best smoothie bars are in Australia," he said. He didn't. But that's what the internet was for.

"Oh, you from there?" she asked, smirking a little.

"No, but I'm well traveled," he said easily. "And knowledgeable. I don't have to be from Australia to know Australia and be able to take someone around it with me."

"It sounds awful big to visit all of it," she noted.

"Special places, then," he said. "I'll bring a map."

"Which special places?" she wondered. "Other'n smoothie bars."

"Landmarks," he said, wincing, "even though they can kinda boring. The ocean. Swimsuits are always fun. Places to shop, places to eat."

"The ocean's right there," she said, pointing in a random direction. It was an island. She was right no matter what.

"Yeah, but you haven't seen it from the Australian beaches," he said and winked at her. "And I haven't seen you in a bathing suit."

She arched a brow. "An' what if I don't got a bathing suit?"
