3rd Floor Common Room: Sunday night [8-31-08]

Peyton's room was way too damn boring, so she didn't want to start putting her records and things out till she had a chance to do something about that. Tomorrow she could hit up a store for paint and stuff. She wondered how Meg felt about bright red.

In the meantime she'd found the common room and was camped out there working on some of her artwork while the TV played mindlessly in the background.

As a boy in England, and then a King of Narnia, Edmund hadn't exactly been in the habit of preparing his own meals. It was something he was having to get used to here, but more often than not he couldn't find what he was looking for. That was why today he'd trekked up one floor to find the cereal he liked best out of what he'd tried so far.

After pouring a bowl with cereal and milk and finding a spoon, he set about conquering his growling stomach. It was then that he noticed someone else was in the room. "My apologies," he said after swallowing a mouthful of cereal. "I didn't mean to intrude."

Peyton looked up from her drawing. "What? Oh, hey, no, you're more than welcome. It's a common room, right?"

"You seemed very intent on your work. I didn't want to interrupt. But if you don't mind?" He gestured to a chair so he could sit and eat. It wasn't very proper, but the cereal was a last resort for food and he'd waited until he was very hungry to finally venture out of his room to find something.

"Yeah sure, please sit," she said. "I'm just... you know, doing some drawing, trying to settle in. My room's a little... bland. It was making me crazy."

"I understand. Believe me." He'd been holed up in his room far too much. "Did you arrive with the new students yesterday?"

She nodded. "Yeah, I did. Still adjusting to all the weirdness, you know?"

"I can imagine it takes some getting used to. Forgive me, it seems that I found some cereal but lost my manners along the way. I didn't introduce myself. I'm Edmund."

"Oh gosh, yeah, Peyton. Peyton Sawyer," she said quickly. "It's nice to meet you, Edmund. I'm guessing you're not new?"

"Still mostly new," he admitted. "I came here part-way through the summer, although it feels like much longer. I haven't taken to Fandom as quickly as I'd hoped." That had a lot to do with brooding instead of getting out and about, but he wasn't about to admit that. "Perhaps the new semester will be a good place to start again."

He did a poor job of it at the picnic, so Cal figured he should at least try to meet a few new people before anyone could give him a hard time about being antisocial. He figured, as well, that going to a different floor might be a good pool to dip into.

He poked his head into the room to see if anyone was there, and, seeing that there was, lifted a hand in greeting to...whoever. "Hey."

Peyton looked up from her drawing. "Hey."

After a second of looking at the girl, Cal was confident that, no, he hadn't seen her around, and then offered a small, friendly smile. "Hey," he said again, coming into the room after all and taking a seat nearby. "Working on something?"

Just some drawing," she said a little shyly. "Nothing special."

"Is it at least of anything interesting?"

"It is to me."

"...Can I asked what?" Cal inquired, head tilting slightly and wondering if he'd already charged in on delicate territory before he'd even introduced himself to this girl, but it was hard to imagine anyone being that shy.

She shrugged and showed him a sort of cartoon pencil drawing of her in her '63 Comet driving with the sign "Welcome to Tree Hill" being left far behind her.

Cal leaned in for a good look at the picture, and then grinned a little. "I take it Tree Hill is where you're from?"

Edmund nodded hello since his mouth was full of cereal.

Cal nodded back and, despite the cereal probably staving off questions, asked, "New kid?"

He didn't recognize him, anyway, so it was probably a good guess.

He finished chewing and swallowed. "From last term. I haven't been out much." He'd been brooding. It was a time-consuming hobby. "I'm Edmund."

"Cal," he offered back, with a nod, and then nodded toward Edmund's cereal. "Is it safe to assume that there's more of that in the cupboard and I can steal some?"

"I prefer to use the term 'commandeer' but yes, there's plenty left. My common room downstairs has cereal too, but that's the best I've found."

Cal couldn't help grinning at the suggestion of word choice, and headed over to the kitchette cabinets. "Yeah," he said. "My common room probably does, too, but I'm here trying to branch out a little, and I might as well get dinner while I'm at it."

"I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who considers cereal a suitable replacement for dinner."
