Fourth floor common room, Monday morning

Dean didn't have any classes today and figured he could start off the term by making breakfast for whoever happened by. And if no one happened by, then there'd just be a lot of food for him to eat.

Really, there wasn't any bad here.

"Until?" Dean leapt on that bit.

"Things won't be the same when I graduate," Sam explained. "I could protect her then, if she still wants me to."

"Did you think to maybe mention to her that this is just a temporary idiocy on your part then?" Dean asked in a carefully neutral voice.

"Of course I did," Sam said. "It didn't help though, because that doesn't change the fact that I can't be with her right now."

"Actually considering she was asking me if you were ever going to change your mind, I'm thinking the temporary bit kinda got lost in the translation."

Sam sighed, setting his plate aside since he was no longer hungry. "I didn't mean for things to get so screwed up."

Dean sighed and shook his head with fond exasperation. "You really do need a keeper sometimes, don't you?" he asked, reaching out to ruffle Sammy's hair.

Sam scowled, but didn't move away. "I don't need a keeper. I need fewer people around me, that's the point."

"Dude, that ain't gonna happen if only because there's no way I'm going to let you cut yourself off from life."

"I'm not going to cut you out, if that's what you're worried about," Sam said. "I know you can handle whatever gets thrown at us.

"It's more than just me though," Dean said. "Awesome as I am."

"Dad and Zoe and Grace too," Sam said, assuming that's who Dean meant. "I'm not going to abandon our family."

"There's a whole world out there that's not related to us though," Dean pointed out.

"I don't need to date the whole world, Dean."

"You're talking about not dating anybody though. Or probably even being close friends. Dude, you can't live that way."

"I can until the demon's dead. We have the gun now, remember?" Sam said.

"No, you can't," Dean repeated. "Because I won't let you. And if you don't find your own friends and significant others to hang around, I'll do it for you. And that'll mean a lot of time hanging with Alec and me."

"Yeah, because it would be a really great idea to put Alec in danger now that I actually kind of like him again," Sam said.

Dean centered in on the most important part of that sentence. "Wait, you're admitting you like Alec?"

Sam rolled his eyes, but cracked a smile too. "Yes, Dean. I don't mind Alec anymore. He did come back, after all."

"I'd pay good money for you to say that you like him to his face."

"If a situation arises where I have to admit it to him, I will," Sam promised.

"You know I'm going to have to set up just such a situation now."

"You really don't have to, it's okay."

"Dude, I totally have to," Dean insisted.
