Second floor common room, Monday afternoon

Once Lola figured out that all kicking the fuzzy little Fußbälle did was make more fuzzy little Fußbälle, she decided it'd probably be a good idea to get out of her room before she had to explain to Tony why it as filled with furry things that liked to bite ankles.

Which would be how she ended up slouched down on the couch in the common room, one booted foot propped up against the edge of the cushions, the other sticking out in the air as she tried to see if the furry things would jump for her shoe laces like cats.

"Bored?" Hannibal asked, spotting the..girl and the furry thing as he passed by.

"Was?" Lola looked up and smiled. "Ah, no. Are these the gremlins I have been told about?"

"I..." He looked at the little thing. "...don't think so. Gremlins are a little less furry, a little more ugly and bitey."

One of the fuzzy things started trying to gnaw through Lola's boot.

"These are very bitey," she said. "But I think they are not scary enough." She offered her hand. "I'm Lola."

"Hannibal," he said, still watching that little furry thing. "Yeah, I think if that was a gremlin, you'd be doing some weird things right about now. You new?"

"Ja, I'm here only since Saturday. Weird things?"

"Welcome," he said easily. "And gremlins, from what I've heard, have a tendency to make you sing and dance and just exact...exactly the opposite of how you are normally."

Lola nodded. "So that is why you don't let them bite you. It is good to know."

"Glad you think so," he said and smiled. "You're not from near here, are you?"

She shook her head. "It is obvious, with my accent, ja? I'm from Germany."

"So, you're from way outta town," he said, nodding. "How's that working for you so far?"

"It is not so bad. I'm not, ah, used to speaking English so much, but it's good practice. And I think I am from closer than some, here."

"You definitely are," he said, flopping down in a seat nearby. "And you haven't fled or aren't hiding. That's good. How'd you end up all the way over here?"

Romeo nudged the furry things out of the way with his foot as he came back to the dorms after class, and he stopped in the common room the floor below his own to see if they were everywhere.

He found that, to his sorrow, they seemed to be. "Good evening," he told the girl with red hair, taking a seat on the other couch. "Have you tried dropping books on them yet?"

Lola looked up and shook her head. "No, but kicking them into the wall only makes two of them instead of one."

"I should be afraid to shoot one, even if I could have my gun in the dorms," Romeo mused.

"They do not seem to be too harmful," Lola offered. "If you are wearing thick enough boots."

Romeo gave a rueful glance to his sneakers. "Perhaps that was my problem, then. But no, they've not hurt me, they're only annoying."

He pushed his hair back, realizing he was being rude. "I'm Romeo, by the way. You're new?"

"Ja," Lola said. "Though I will be happy when that is no longer the question. I'm Lola."

"If my experience is one to go by, that took about a month," he told her. "I got here in January."

He noticed the accent. "Are you German, or is that another question you're well tired of?"

"I am German, ja. And no, because many people don't guess right. They only say 'you're not from around here' or something."

"To be fair, here it could be the accent from some distant planet as easily as a country in Europe," he shrugged. "I spent some time in France, so I've heard the accent before."

"I speak some French, though I have not been. Did you like it there?"

"Very much so," Romeo nodded. "There was an unfortunate event where people were sent to the past, so I was in Paris in 1899. It was hard to not know how I should get home, but once I adjusted I" -- spent four months completely drunk -- "enjoyed myself. It reminded me of home, a bit."

"Oh? Where is home, then?"
