The fact that he was in the kitchen probably surprised no one, but what he was doing probably looked a little funny. The candy thermometer, the multiple pots, all the cleaning...

Summer ice was not an easy thing to make. He still had a few faint lines on his arms from when he'd first tried to make it after Sarima's sisters had been taken.

That said, the scent of rosewater and lemon and sugar was high on the air and everything was going smoothly. He already had his first batch on the counter, the second in the fridge and the last he was just finishing up.

"I thought I'd find you in here," Amber said as she walked in and headed towards the kitchen, checking out the pots and everything he had out. "Whatcha makin'?"

"Summer ice," he said as he continued stirring the mixture. "It's a sort of confection. There's some on the counter if you'd like."

She didn't hesitate to grab a piece and take a bite. "Mmm, this is good, Liir. Really good." Amber turned, leaning her back against the counter, and finished her candy.

"How've you been?"

"Well enough," he said. "I went to the picnic this weekend and met a few of the new arrivals. They were all rather friendly enough. Yourself?"

"I went home, missed the picnic, and listened to ma yap at me about this that and the other. She's a beautician you know, so I did get my hair done, which was something. Of course with her one hooked hand it kind of hurt at times."

A beautician was someone who did hair. He stored that away as another little random piece of information he hadn't known.

"Well, it looks very nice, if you don't mind me saying."

Amber beamed. "Thanks!" Even though her hair was just normal as ever. To her at least.

"Can I help you with anything? Wash a pot or something?"

He shook his head with a smile.

"I wouldn't sentence you to this. It's why I make rather a lot each time I do it. The clean up is maddening."

He turned to grin at her over his shoulder.

"If you'd like to stay here for a time so I'm not working myself to the bone by myself, however, I would much appreciate it."

She shrugged a single shoulder. "I wouldn't mind. I used to work at my school cafeteria washing off trays and disposing of garbage. I needed the extra money."

Smiling, she found a bare spot on the counter and pushed herself up and back, sitting while she watched him. "I did come to find you, you know, so I would enjoy sticking around to chit-chat. I've missed you."

He continued stirring, but turned around a little more.

"I've missed you as well. I'm rather glad to see you around. Up to anything fun since you got back then? What're you taking this semester?"

Amber looked down at what he was stirring instead of him directly. "Not much no. Had a rather deep conversation with Viki last night and I've come to a few conclusions on subjects that were bothering me. But whatever, I'm not going to bore you with my rambling on that."

She paused, seemed thoughtful. "I had another self-defense class with Murdock this morning," she looked down at her knuckles. "I'm taking Home Economics, Sex Ed, Survival Skills, and History in Living Color. I'm kind of busy I guess. With classes and work and The Boards; I've got a full plate. What about you?"

"Diplomacy, Art, Survival Skills, and Literature," he announced with a faint smile. "Plus I'm still at both jobs."

"But at least I'll see you for Survival Skills."

"Oh, you are just as busy as I am," she mused. "And still find time to cook. Which reminds me: you owe me dinner."

He grinned.

"Oh I do, do I? Well... you'll just have to tell me something you might especially enjoy and we'll set up a date for it."

"Yah, you do," she replied, grinning as well. "I think maybe anything? I don't get many fancy dinners so maybe something fancy. Just... I don't eat shellfish."

He shook his head.

"Not anything I'm particularly enamored of myself. I'll do summer rolls but that's just as easily done with pork or even chicken. Comes of being nowhere near an ocean."

"Isn't a roll, bread?" she asked with a slight tilt of her head.

"Not always," he told her with a shake of his head, still stirring. "I could make some, with no shrimp, for the meal if you'd like."

"You know what I want? A surprise, that's what," she told him, her eyes sparkling. "I can't remember the last surprise I've gotten."

He nodded, very firmly.

"If that's what you want, that is what you'll get."

"I'm free almost every evening too, just so you know. I'm not exactly a social butterfly, you know. Something else ma bugged me about," she said, rolling her eyes.

"How's your dad, Liir?"

"Well enough," he said with a smile that curled on his lips slowly. It was a contentment he was settled into, something that he could be happy about for as long as it lasted.

"Still at the theatre. He's gotten a job, though. He's working at the bookshop as well."

He grinned now.

"Eating well, of course."

"Mr. Tennant mentioned how well they were eating, also that you should get a life," she chuckled. "But I'm glad he's doing well. I haven't had a chance too meet him yet."

He rolled his eyes.

"I hope you do. He's very nice. Karal got to have dinner with him the other night. They got on well."

Other than that irritating tendency to compliment him, but that was neither here nor there.

"Well, maybe Mr. Tennant is right," she said at that eye roll of his.

"I will try to meet him; maybe go into the book shop or something."
