Third Floor Common Room: Wednesday Afternoon

Anyone entering the common room at this time will notice that Dor is having an intensive conversation with the microwave.

"So... it's not magic?" Dor asked looking somewhat confused.

"What's the problem?" the microwave responded. "It's pretty simple. I have magnetron tube that sends out microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules within food."

Dor just started at the microwave not understanding one word that it said.

"Okay. Fine. It's kind of like magic," the microwave said with a weary sigh.

Dor's befuddled expression showed that he still didn't understand what was going on.

After her sex ed class, Claire was starving for some strange reason. She went into the common room in search of food.

And stared for a long moment at the boy talking to the microwave.

"Do they all talk back in 2008?" she ventured. That seemed like something Jen could have maybe mentioned.

"This place is never boring," Lee said, having come in during the last few word's of the microwave's statement. "Is it?"

"Nope! Just me!" The microwave chirped. "I'm special."

"No you aren't," Dor said as he rolled his eyes a bit. "I'm the one who makes you talk."

"Aw, Phooey," the microwaved groused. "You're no fun."

"I guess not," Dor said with a shrug and turned to wave at the girl. "Hi. I'm Dor."

"Claire," Claire returned, looking a little weirded out but very intrigued. "So you're some kind of witch with small appliances?"

"Well I haven't been bored yet," Dor replied with a nod. "I've seen a place that does so much with so little magic before."

"It doesn't take much magic in a place like this," he said, half smiling at Dor. "Not that I know or anything. I'm not magic at all. I just watch others do it."

"Magician," Dor replied with a shrug. "But it works with any inanimate object. Where I come from almost everyone has a magic talent of some sort they can use."

"Well where I'm from we don't have anything like this stuff," Dor said waving at the appliances. "So this is just as amazing to me as magic probably is to you."

"Good comparison," Lee said after a moment. "You guys don't have electricity? Lots of barbecues going on, then?"

Jack was wandering around, looking for food. Or, more precisely, looking for food that someone else had cooked that they had leftovers of.

"Huh. The one on the second floor never talked."

Lola really wasn't lost this time. She really was just exploring.

She watched Dor for a moment. "Do all of the microwaves speak, or is it only on this floor?"

In the search for some food, Chad tilted his head at the new kid talking to the microwave. He would..uhh, hate to interrupt a conversation, but...

"Hi," he offered, lifitng a hand.

"Everyone?" Claire boggled. "So are there people who can kill with their mind?" because she had wished for that one a couple times.

"Actually we use magic in a similar way for cooking and cleaning," Dor explained. "Though our food is often pretty much ready to eat. Like..."

Dor looked around and spotted a loaf of bread and pointed at it.

"Like that bread there? In Xanth it actually grows on a breadfruit tree. As do a lot of clothes and shoes."

Seregil happened to be walking by and stuck his head in when he heard voices. "I wasn't aware that they spoke."

Lee nodded at the unfamiliar girl. He could do polite. That was easy.

"That's because it doesn't," Dor explained. "I have a magic talent that does it."

"Actually it's something I do," Dor explained. "I can make inanimate objects talk."

"It's actually kind of cool if you think about it," the refrigerator chimed in.

"Hi," Dor said with a cheerful wave. "Sorry, am I in the way?"

"Yes," the microwave said in a snotty tone. "He obviously needs to warm something up."

"He could use me," the stove chimed in.

"He needs to get food out of me first," the refrigerator sang out.

Dor gave Chad a befuddled look and shrugged. "I'm Dor," he said a little lamely.

"...trees?" Okay, that was a new one. It was...an amusing new one, at that. "I don't even know you and you're kinda making me wanna visit Xanth. Does all your stuff grow on trees?"

Lola's eyes slid sideways to stare at the refrigerator for a moment. "That is . . . an interesting ability. You must be very popular at parties."

Polite was fine. Claire could do it, too.

"Hi," Claire said. "Are you used to talking microwaves yet?"

"Oh. One of those," Jack said, giving the microwave the stinkeye. "Seems like everyone here has a magic talent or something. Huh. Hi. I'm Jack Burton," he said, sticking his hand out for shaking.

"I think there was one person who could do that a while ago," Dor said thinking about the question. "But magical talents don't really repeat. So he would have been the only one. There is one magician who can make zombies though and another one who can transform people into any kind of animal or plant."

"No, that's a new one for me," he said and snickered, "and I've been here over a year now. I need to just let myself believe that anything's going to be able to talk here."
